Hello everyone,

I'll spare you the details from now, I've been having my ol pc for years now, lately installed a new GPU ( half a year ago), everything was fine and dandy...

Until a couple of days ago. I want to turn on the Pc, it runs for a few ticks then shuts off. Tried starting it for a few minutes, the started to diagnose.

Took out the gpu, nothing. The HDD, the cd, nothing.

Then I took off both my ram sticks. It started working. Plug a ah heck in, dies.

I thought, hey, maybe it's a faulty ram stick /slot. Started to jiggle around with them, tried all combinations, I even tried a spare ram stick I had lying around. Same thing. It dies after a few ticks.

Now, could you please tell me for fact, before I'm off spending my 3 month salary on pc components, is the mobo fried?

I used the pc a lot, been playing on it working in 3ds max and ue4, is it time to grab a new mobo and the rest?

Thanks in advance,
Vlad

Already tested the PSU, this config ran for more than half a year, no electrical surges, no thunderstorms to affect it...

Is it possible that the ram slots became faulty and short circuit the mobo?

yes that may be possible... also could you tell what gpu did u use and your psu brand and model no...??? as we should rule out every single cause...as if power supply is not adequate to the components then it can cause other parts to short, causing physical and electrical damage. this occurs especially in overclocking cpu or if power delivery to gpu is not adequate.

Ok, so the config is this:

CPU: AMD Athlon X2 5500 (dual@2.6Ghz)
Cpu Fan: Stock AMD Fan
Mobo: Gigabyte GA61-VME-S2
HDD: Seagate 160GB SATAII
RAM: 2 x whats-its-name 1 GB DDR2
PSU: 550W (or something around there)
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 750 TI OC
Other: 1 x Realtek Ethernet Card

It is curious how the hell it started acting up like this, it was running just fine for more than half a year, the GPU has an auxiliary electrical supply coming from 2 molex cable. The DVD is not plugged in, I don't need it. The case is open in a well ventilated area, no occlusions.
The temps NEVER jumped ofer 60 degrees celsius (on load, compiling ue4 sharders, playing anims in 3DS max, Dark Souls 1, 2, Dead Space 3 been played and completed on this machine with no sudden shutdowns or errors)

as you said i also think thus may be faulty ram slot. i checked if you system power requirements and they were less than even half your psu is providing.....so it is definately not a power issue.. i may be related to motherboard....but before buying new mobo or even new pc..check your bios settings and make sure it is not a software issue. if ram slots are faulty you could change your mobo coz buying a pc now a days is not cheap...i have just bought my new pc and is was a whoping $1500..

I can't even get into BIOS, and AFAIK you cannot access anything without RAM, the same RAM that causes the pc to shut down after 3 seconds before even displaying anything on the screen...

I've already got a wishlist ready, from this old PC i can keep only the GPU, and the rest goes up to 600E, it's not that bad, i just wanted a clear info, a pat on the back and a boot in the ass on my way to the pc store lol
