GPU: R9 270, 2GB VRAM, not overclocking or using SLI/Crossfire.
CPU: Intel Core i5-4590 3.3GHz Quad-Core
Motherboard: ASRock H97 PRO4 ATX LGA1150
RAM: 8GB DDR3-1600 Memory
PSU: Corsair Builder 600W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Pro Version 1511
GPU Drivers: 9.14.10.01249
Chipset Drivers: Intel 9 Series Chipset 14.8.7.1051

I recently had to reinstall Windows 10 (boo Windows 10, boo!) so I obviously had to reinstall all programs and drivers too. I have an R9 270 (driver 9.14.10.01249), Radeon Settings version 17.2.1, and the latest version of Afterburner.

I did the same thing I've always done: made a custom fan profile in Afterburner, saved the profile, and clicked the button to 'Apply at Windows Startup'. It does not do that. My fan profile only runs when I open Afterburner, and it stops when I close Afterburner. When my custom profile isn't on, Radeon Settings shows that fan speed goes to Auto yet it just sits at 18% regardless of temperature (even at 90 degrees). I noticed that when rebooting and first entering the OS, the fan does go to my custom speed for about 2 seconds before it reverts back to 18%. I have to believe that something is overriding Afterburner's fan speed but I don't know what it could possibly be.

Any help?

Solution: Download Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.11.5. Read my last post for more details.

I am using EVGA Precision X. I just recently discovered that my graphics card fan was off (the default is off until around 60C). I had a custom fan profile that I thought was running. I had to set it to run at start up to get the fan profile to run automatically. I don't want it running all the time either, but until I figure out something else that is the solution.

Thanks for the responses. Having the Afterburner program itself boot with Windows and keeping it open does keep the profile on. The problem is that I stream on Twitch and streaming software used to be incompatible with Afterburner running. In a brief test, it does seem like the streaming software may have since fixed the issue with incompatibility. I would love to see if there's another solution though because I never needed the Afterburner program to be running before for the profiles to work.

AMD Support got back to me and fixed the issue, although it doesn't really make much sense. It turns out that when they introduced the feature Wattman, it made programs like "MSI Afterburner, Trixxx, Asus GPU Tweak, etc." incompatible. So the solution is to download Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.11.5. Problem solved.

The odd thing is that Wattman was only introduced on certain cards (which I don't have) and it wasn't shown to be downloaded in my software. And to top it off, the latest version of Afterburner (4.3.0) was patched/updated to work with Wattman. So the issue was a feature that I didn't have interfering with a program that was supposed to be compatible with it. Yeah.

When I bought my last graphics card, I tried out Asus Tewak, MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision X. I settled on Precision X. . Perhaps it is time to look at them again.

With Precision X I don't like the on screen help. That's because there is practically no onscreen help or instructions..
