Used i5 3570 vs used i5 2500 for productivity/gaming.

I'm upgrading from my i3 2120 (that I've used for the last 15 months) to a cpu that i can use for the next 1 to 2 years until I'm ready to build a new desktop. I can get a used i5 2500 for $51.98 or a used i5 3570 for $85.00. Which one should i get and why?

For productivity a i7 would be better. But if you can't afford one then I would go with the 3570

The difference is pretty small but the 3570 is faster. If the $35 doesn't hurt too much I'd go for the 3570, but if you decide to go for the cheaper one you won't have sacrificed much at all.

According to the answers so far it looks like the i5 3570 is the better option. Is there any other used cpu for around the same price that would be better then the i5 3570? Thanks!

Not really, no. However something like an i7 3770 or even i7 2600 would compete with a new 6th or 7th generation i5 for a fraction of the price.

i5-3570 has about 10% more processing power than the i5-2500 (directly comparable since they are both 4C/4T CPU's).

Impossible to assign a "value" to that especially when I don't know what graphics card you have and what GAMES you play.

If you want to GUESSTIMATE then use PASSMARK to compare. Look at the SINGLE THREAD performance primarily, but if you can get an i7-2xxx or 3xxx that is compatible with your motherboard for a reasonable price then stick with it.

Whether your motherboard and cooling supports overclock also matters.

My i7-3770K (OC to 4.3GHz) is still a great CPU. I have no plans to upgrade for several years.

Sadly my mobo doesn't support overclocking. All the i7 2xxx and i7 3xxx used on eBay start out at $120 and go up. How is an i7 2600 that much better then an i5-3570. I'm using an Evga Gtx 750 ti.

Just realized that my mobo is a dell 0gdg8y that doesn't support ivy bridge.

The i5 2500 is the best cpu that'll work. Didn't think about it until now. At this point buying another mobo isn't worth it unless i find a super deal.
