I am building a PC capable of future upgrades. This is for home use in running a home theater in addition to general productivity applications like open office. This is a project and a test. I already have a monitor and case. I want to keep the total cost for motherboard, ram, hdd and any expansion cards to $500.
I am thinking of an Asrock extreme 970 4 mobo with AMD FX 6300 to start, then building around it. I'm not married to the mobo a I have not bn able to find an IO plate for it.
Any suggestions for expansion cards, ram etc.... are much appreciated.

Solution
You dont need an expansion card for your purpose.

Meh on the 6300/970. You can do budget without having to go to a 2011 platform that will also necessitate a discrete GPU.

I'd do a Kaby Lake Pentium/i3 and skip the discrete GPU since you're not gaming. Especially if you're into 4K video.

Not sure your reference to an I/O plate here. I can't remember the last time I've purchased or installed a motherboard that didn't have an I/O shield in the package. Could you clarify - perhaps you're describing something in an unfamiliar way?

Why not this for well under budget. Great home theatre and browsing PC.

You can add a separate large HDD if you want to store movies/TV shows:

The PC stores around my small town sell mobo/cpu kits but don't carry I shields.

The I/O shield comes packed with the motherboard. Not sure how the stores can sell without them, unless they are selling unpacked stuff. :sarcastic:

They may not list them as beng sold, but every new, modern motherboard has one in the box with the motherboard. They're not a separate item. You'll notice that you will never ever find a new car advertisement or list of features that says "has seats." Because all of 'em do.
