I have heard it is poor practice to use different size drives when making a nas box, but I have a 1.5 TB, a 2 TB, and 3 TB and I was wondering if I could partition them up into 500 GB drives and run them in raid 5? at that point would I be better off running raid 1 and use the smaller two for storage and the bigger one as a back up?

With your drives, you can have a 1.5 TB RAID setup using all 3, or a 2 TB setup with RAID 1 using the larger two drives.
