Game performance not improving with upgraded GPU, CPU spiking.

Recently I purchased a new Nvidia GTX1060 3GB, an upgrade from my previous GTX 760, but I'm finding it is not performing that well in games and, really, my computer seems to be slowing down since. I believe the issue lies with my CPU as it randomly spikes. Even as im sitting idle, it will spike all the way up to 20% and if i start interacting with the screen, that number increases. The program(s) that spikes is seemingly random aswell, with no clear offender. Also, after downloading Core Temp, I found that my Intel 4670K was sitting at a steady 99 degrees celcius.
Am i looking at some form of software problem, or do i need a cpu upgrade or simply better CPU cooling.

I don't know if im missing some obvious problem/solution but any suggestions are welcome, I'm keen to play Playerunknowns Battlegrounds!

Thanks

If your CPU is sitting steady at 99C, easy way to check if it actually is would be to monitor your CPU clock. If your clock is never boosting up to its base/turbo frequency then you're definitely throttling, and might just need to reseat the cooler that is on your CPU.

Of course when you cleaned it you added new thermal paste i am guessing lol. Anyways yes i would upgrade from stock right away, but still those seem way to high for also. Just pick yourself up a nice new heat sink drop at least 60 on it

The lower end ones are much much cheaper, if the low end ones used to retail around $60 (I'm a lowly 19 y/o so I have no recollection of 2005 computers). At around $60 these days you get into low end AIOs and the upper echelons of air cooling, the big boy air coolers (V8 GTS, NHD14/15 etc) come in between the $75-100 bracket. Thankfully there are some lower budget ones that will still provide more than enough cooling :)

Thanks for the help guys, as it turns out one of the feet on my heat sink broke as i was putting it back on, so it wasn't applied properly. Im going to pick up a new one today as well as new paste. But I'm also wondering, could I possibly have permanently damaged my CPU?

Okay, so ive installed a new heat sink along with new paste, but according to Core Temp, my CPU is still reaching pretty high temperatures of around 90+. Will it just take a while to equalize to a lower temperature or could it be a sign of something else?

That doesn't sound good unfortunately. What is the heatsink/cooler you installed? Can you post any system pics, Core temp screenshots?

Actually, it would seem that my temps are lowering and I ran prime95 for a few hours and nothing came up, so i think im all G. My initial problem was the heatsink so thanks to you guys who helped!

I bought a ID-COOLING Sweden Series SE-903 CPU Cooler, and my current temps sit around low 80's. Everything seems to be running fine but that's still fairly high. Any thoughts kol12?

The current temps around low 80's, is that the idle temperature or under a stress test like Prime 95? What is the current idle temperature?

Did you clean the old thermal paste off of the CPU before installing the new cooler? Did you apply new thermal paste and how much?

Well that's mostly the idle temp, though that was just what it was when I looked, I've seeen it go down to low 70's. when I used prime95 they immediately jump up to 97~100.
I did clean off the paste with isopropyl alcohol and q tips. My heat sink actually came with thermal paste already applied to the bottom so it was applied as i attached it to the motherboard, so I can't really say how much

So the idle temp is 70-80C? That's very high idle temp, not normal, and would indicate that the cooler still has an issue. Are you sure you seated the cooler and fastened the pins correctly? Can you post a screenshot of core temp or similar while the computer is idling?
