Hello everyone,
I own a ASUS X53S (K53SV rev 3.1 motherboard) that stopped working some month ago, I tested all the components and I figure out there was a motherboard problem, so I purchase a new motherboard and in the meantime I decide to upgrade CPU, instead of its i5 2430M CPU (that I sold) I bough a i5 3230M CPU.
On http://ark.intel.com I checked their socket: PPGA988 for the 2430M and FCPGA988 for the 3230M (I searched on the web and what I understand, I'm probably wrong, is that the latter is something like an update of the former).
On this other website http://www.cpu-world.com I check again and this I what I get for the socket: G2 (rPGA988B) for the 2430M and G2 (rPGA988B) for the 3230M so I though they were "swappable".

Today I got the new motherboard, I put together all the hardware but my laptop is not booting. All the led are on, I think that's a good sign, but the CPU fan is not working and the screen remain black, it doesn't display any BIOS information neither.
I checked the socket on the new motherboard and on the old one and in both of the two is written rPGA989.
So I'm here to ask you if you know what could be the problem, I also tried to boot the pc with a bootable USB but the result are the same. I also tried to connect a HDMI external monitor and it still receive no signal. I don't know what could be problem, due to the leds are working I think the motherboard work too but I can't see what the problem could be, I know for sure the new CPU is working. One more thing, I don't have my old i5 2430M anymore.

Solution

Your MB is the HM65 chipset MB for the 2nd gen Sandy Bridge cpu, and you will need to update the BIOS for the 3rd gen Ivy Bridge, i5 3230M.

From what you said I think the MB you got does not have the right BIOS for the new i5 3230M. So contact the seller to see you can return it. Or go to local PC shop ask for help, I means let someone to update the BIOS with the other Sandy Bridge cpu. But keep in mind, they may not have, and even they have but you will need go to the ASUS site to check out ASUS has the BIOS for your ASUS X53S.

I recommend to return the i5 3230M, and buy other Sandy Bridge CPU. That is easy way to do.
