hi All,

I have been using AMD Phenom 2 X4 945 processor for about 7 years now - it still meets my needs but recently it is slowing down with new softwares. My use is a mix of basic games and desktop software designing. As of now it is running on stock heat sink (with fan) and open cabinet (side panel is always open now - going foward I want to close it)

I am planning on taking the new RyZen 5 1600X. The problem is - this process would not be coming with a heatsink (fan) so I need to purchase one.

The confusion is - I need to take a liquid cooler (INR 5000 price) or a fan based heat sink (INR 3000-5000). I am living in Vizag (India) and heat is about 50*c (122 Fahrenheit), and there is no AC in the room - room is hot.

So, below are my choices - could you please guide me on correct choice. I am not an overclocker I run all at default (cant bear the loss of any)

Case

Liquid Cooler

Heat Sink 1

Heat Sink 2

Heat Sink 3

Deepcool Gammaxx 400.

You might need to order a bracket for AM4 from Deepcool.

Claims support on their site , but make sure.

Based off the Amazon link provided by SR-71, it's supported since the bracket arm/ring/clip-on mechanism is the same for all AMD(AM2+ onwards) mounts.

^the mechanism located between the fan and the ring.

Why is this better than a liquid cooler? Just wanted to know a little more.

dollar for dollar air almost always outperforms water.

in terms of performance, air and water tend to be similar.

the main benefit of liquid is pushing the bulk of the cooler off the motherboard.

the only case where water or other more exotic cooling methods are required over air are extreme overclocking tests or in cases where a large air cooler would conflict physically with another object in a case.

Deepcool 400's are great air-coolers. Have used them in several PCs. That said, I've started experimenting with Kraken watercoolers and have been very happy. Definitely pricier. Both are very quiet.

50 degrees C? Get yourself a portable room air conditioner. I have this one in my recording studio's control room to supplement my central air conditioning. The control room is around 400 square feet, and in the summer I don't have to turn on the central air conditioning until mid-afternoon when the temperature outside gets over 90F. I have had it for about a year and paid under $300.

Can you check the two link above yours vs the tower - they seem to be the same but cost variation is 50%. I think both are same.

Thats a neat product - but not much disposable income. I have used Intel Atom for 2 years before my current PC- and have run Visual studios and SQL server for software development. Probbaly will plan a air cooler instead of air conditioner.

Antec c40 isn't good enough , the gammaxx 400 will just crush it completely.
The freezer extreme is incompatible.
The enermax , no idea - its expensive though & I don't see it outperforming the gammaxx.

You absolutely 100% need to make sure the gammaxx 400 comes with an am4 fixing kit though before buying - it is needed.

Have you thought about buying the straight 1600 (non x) which comes with a decent cooler??

What mjslakeridge said though is true , you'd be better spending money getting your ambient temps down , any cooler is going to struggle with room temps that high.
When you see cooler reviews they're generally tested with ambient temps 21-22c which is considered a comfortable room temp.

What you said is absolutely true. But my computer is in a small room like area (no walls-but a seperate area) - part of the large hall - I need about 5-6 ton AC to keep it cool. :)

I will go with the Gammaxx 400. 1600x more frequency over 1600 - a little more power help in strategy games or city buildings and it would be a little future proof for another 7-8 years atleast. Checked few more reviews As long as the heatsink is of latch model (am2,3,3+) they will fit the am4, the problem comes only if they are screw type where the base plate needs to be changed or screw too.

Thank you dear - this confirmation is reassuring. Now it saved me few more rupees about 1.5K. It is a custom fitting but still a latch model only, nothing touches the base plate, it only links to holder/mount on the board (saw a you tube video on installing it to AM3)
