Low fps even on old games with a GTX 1070

I have an MSI laptop (GT72VR 6RE). It has an i7-6700HQ processor and a GTX 1070. It runs Fallout 4 at about 60 fps comfortably. But in big battles in the total war games right the way from Medieval II to Warhammer the frame rate can drop to as low as the mid twenties. Can someone let me know how to get things running smoother please? thank you

Are any CPU cores hitting 100%? Those old games probably can't use all threads and may be maxing out on a single core.

Easiest way is to use a program like MSI Afterburner

Right I just downloaded that and saw that whilst playing Medieval 2, core 3 was at 100%

I'd guess an old game like that can only use 1 or 2 cpu cores/threads and as laptop CPU's don't have the single core power desktops have you CPU is actually a bottleneck. More modern games capable of using all CPU threads should run better.

OK thanks. Are you able to give any tips please on how to get the frame rate up on Warhammer total war? It often hovers around the 30 mark sometimes bellow when there is lots of animation on screen. I've turned Vsync off in the NVidia control centre which helped a bit... but perhaps you know something else I could do. Thanks

If CPU cores are maxing out there is nothing you can do.
