Mother Board x CPU

Solution

I could suggest a new MoBo / CPU but first i have to state... and state emphatically. Going from 2600k to 7700k will bring no significant improvement in gaming. Son No. 3's box has a GFX card setup that is 9% faster than the Son No.2 's setup. Son No. 3 has a 2600k ... Son No. 2 is 4 years newer w/ Devils Canyon. It isn't narrowing the gap.

i am a amd fanboy, amd ryzen

but the intel is good too, more expensive

both will need a cpu cooler, none comes with one on the box

the i7 needs a 270 series mainboard, the 170 could not work thanks to bios version not recognicing the new gen 7 cpu

Ryzen totally comes with a CPU cooler. Three different models out have three different coolers.

i7-7700k will work in Z170 boards, as long as it has had the BIOS updated. Not much sense in buying one though, easier to just get the newer Z270 board, additional features, more PCIe lanes, etc. Intel's K series chips do indeed not come with coolers, so add that to the overall price.

AMD goofed a little on the AM4 socket, there aren't a lot of off the shelf compatible coolers. Many companies are releasing free or paid upgrade kits for their existing coolers. Though many are already selling AM4 compliant coolers. Just have to be careful what you order if you want to use a different cooler.

If you are only gaming, the 7700k is likely the better choice. If you intend to use your computer for a lot of multitasking, video editing, content creation, compiling, etc. Then the 8 Core Ryzen chips are a good deal.

1. For a Gaming Box, the Intel CPus are the better choice. The 1700 is almost $200 more than the 7600k which performs better.in gaming. If thinking AMD wait for April 11 and see what the new CPUs can do. Entry point for MoBos is higher too

2. You'd want a Z270 MoBo,... unless you have a spare Skylake CPU laying around for which you could use to upgrade the BIOS so it could take Kaby Lake.

3. Which Giga Z270X ? Be aware that the low - mid range boards will saddle you with low budget audio solutions. Asus was thge only one doing this w/ Z170 but w/ Z270, the other brands are following suit. We agreed with anandtech that the MSI Z170A SLI Plus set a new baseline standard at the $130 price point.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/10236/the-msi-z170a-sli-plus-review

This continues with the Z270 version which delivers ALC 1220. Most options in this price range offer last generation, low budget sound solutions (ALC 887 / 892).

From Gigbayte, cheapest option AFAIK is the Gigabyte GA-Z270-Gaming K3 ($140)

So unless workstation type apps are a significant part of your activity, i just don't see the 1700 as an appropriate choice, and especially not at a cost premium of $200.

I am in fact looking for a new CPU and mobo as i only have an i7 2600,
I'll need to get better ram as i only have ddr3.
So i am probably looking to spend a fair bit 600-700, as a budget.
Could you suggest a mobo CPU ram and cooler for that much, maybe a little more.

I have the Gigabyte Z270X Gaming 5, and it does everything I need it to do. The 3 (white) or K3 (black) would be just as good for most purposes.

Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 C15 3000Mhz is decent and relatively inexpensive. (Though ram prices have been rising of late)

Add your i7 7700k and something like a Cryorig H7 to that and you are easily around $600

Again, that MoBo provides all the features you need for a gaming box. You can spend more ...

The Gigabyte GA-Z270XP-SLI is a nice alternative and its now " USD $15 off w/ promo code 0404SPRTSA53, limited offer" and has a $20 Rebate making it just $105 ... The Gigabyte GA-Z270-Gaming K3 is another board that gives the gamer all they need.

If ya want a break from the standard black / black or red / black theme, the Gigabyte GA-Z270X-Designare Motherboard gives you something unique to look at for $50 more. Would look smokin' in a Phanteks white / silver case. Pick RAM to match your chosen color scheme.
