Should file transfers over a local network (with a router) be done at internet download speeds?

I've recently purchased a new PC and am using my previous PC as a server, but I am trying to move some files from my old PC to my new.

Is it normal for file transfers over a local network (through a router) to be done at internet download speeds (100Mbs) or should it be a lot faster.

I have tried:
- enabling the "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
- disabling "Jumbo Packet"
- changed "Speed and Duplex" to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex

... unless you somehow manage to use software that routes your transfer through the internet, which of course would be silly and inefficient.

If you're connecting to the router via WiFi, use a cable instead when possible.

Also, if you have a fast network, you can easily be bound by the speed of the storage devices on either end. How fast can computer A queue up data and how fast can computer B write the data it's receiving.
