So my internet is fine most of the time, however as my pc does not have inbuilt wifi I share my laptops connection via an Ethernet cable to my pc. This works, however very slowly- I only receive about 50kb/s down on steam on the pc. Additionally, when sharing, the internet speed for all my other devices on my network slows down immensely. Any ideas?

It's possible that the PC you're on is pulling updates for itself thus the slow down across your network however when you're speaking of networking and connecting them across other computers, it'd help us to learn what your laptop's SKU and desktop specs + OSes are in order to understand if there is any complication. Furthermore there is also the point about the ethernet cable being bad.
FYI, you could've jut used a wireless adapter for your PC? Provided you own a wireless router in your residence...?
