So, an year ago I had an issue with my AMD fx8120, and some people helped me.
This is a 5 years old, and now it's overheating. I wanna change to Intel, so I also need a new motherboard.

Right now, my computer is:

ASUS M5A78L-M USB3*
Geforce 950 GTX 950 SC
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 x2
AMD FX 8120 Black Edition
CORSAIR Watercooling Hydro Series (Not sure what model exactly)
CORSAIR CX 600 power source

*Which doesn't really go along with my CPU, someone told me it's structure could indeed overhead with my CPU.

So, first I thought, maybe I coulkd go with a fx6300, it's cheap and not tha tbad, my GF has one and her computer runs some games smoothly. Maybe my Mobo would go along with that one.
Also I found a "Processador AMD FX 8300 Octa Core, Black Edition, Cache 16MB, 3.3GHz (4.2GHz Max Turbo) AM3+ FD8300WMHKBOX" for almost the same price.

But then thought some people say Intel is a bit more expansive but cooler and faster.

Then I found this:

"Processador Intel Core i3-7100 Kaby Lake 7ª Geração, Cache 3MB 3,9GHz LGA 1151 Intel HD Graphics BX80677I37100"

Is it worth going for a i3? What mobo would go along with that? What about "Placa-Mãe GIGABYTE p/ Intel LGA 1150 mATX GA-B85M-D3PH, DDR3, HDMI 4K, DVI, DualBIOS, SATA 6Gb/s , USB 3.0"? I'm a bit short on money, so I'm going for cheap stuff, but I can't stand having my computer turning off during games or sometimes, even when I'm watching some Netflix or HBO GO.

Solution
My reply was based on an 'as of now with a restricted budget' point of view. Moving to Intel, any chip, is far more money. Hence my suggestion on another AMD CPU that will get Laureon back to a stable platform for the time being.

Five years old or not, you are still in an OK place IF you are happy with what performance you can get at this point in time. I'd make the financially safer move now and save toward an entirely new build in 6-12 months or when you're comfortable to get what you want.

I don't generally go all in on builds, maybe very five years when tech really changes. My usual path is new build, ground up then over the next several years adding in upgrades as they are available. I'm still running an Asus 990fx...
The problem is, if you want new intel CPU, you will have to buy new ram too, not only motherboard.
If you want to keep that DDR3 you have, you need a 4xxx series CPU (for example i3-4170, it would work with the motherboard you listed).

The motherboard you chose is for the previous haswell generation of chips (i3-4xxx), and is physically not compatible with the newer 6th and 7th gen chips.

Your M5A78L motherboard is a low end board that does not support 125W TDP cpus so it ownt support any 83xx serries CPU except for the E serries which suck. The motherbaord also lacks decent VRMS so a 6300 would just be thorwing away good money after bad.

The entire fx platform is now pretty old (2012) and thus intel CPUs with less cores can do doughnuts around it because it is that much more effiecent and gets more IPC (instructions per clock).

Right now the best deal in town is a Pentium G4560 it has the same amount of cores/threads as the i3s do, it has slightly lower clock speed but is almost half the price at $60. When looking at what you are paying for vs what you are getting none of the i3's give you enough performance increse over this pentium to justify spending more, only going up to an i5 makes sense.

To switch to intel you will need new cpu, mobo, and ram. You will also need to do a full reinstall of winodws to do that large of a platform change.
If you have windows 10 you can link it to your microsoft account and then transfer the license.

So here is what you need (if in USA this will cost around $180):
Pentium G4560
B250 Motherbaord (Gigabyte or ASUS prefured)
DDR4-2400 Memory (I prefer GSKILL brand, next is crucial and corsair).

Cool, thanks for the help! At least now I know what I need for intel. So...

Intel Core i3-4170 Haswell, Cache 3MB, 3.7Ghz, LGA 1150, Intel HD Graphics 4400 BX80646I34170
GIGABYTE p/ Intel LGA 1150 mATX GA-B85M-D3PH, DDR3, HDMI 4K, DVI, DualBIOS, SATA 6Gb/s , USB 3.0

Is it worth? I have no idea how to compare a intel vs amd. Would it be better than the one that I have?

What would you say about those AMD? Fx 6300 and fx8300? Any idea if they would work well with the mobo tha tI alredy have? Advises are welcomed!

I see. Well, I really didn't want to change my memory.

I do have win10, upgraded from 8.1. I never really linked it to any account and didnt know I could trasnfer license that way, I'll look for it later, ty for letting me know.

What about the sugggestion that DRagor gave me? The mobo and i3 to keep my DDR3?

Btw, I'm from Brazil, so prices might be a little different here. I just prefer this forum as people are polite and very helpfull!

If buying new, will pay pretty much the same for that old 4th generation hardware as you will for the better kaby lake Pentium G4560 build i listed earlier despite needing to buy new memory. So thus there is really no point to buy 3 year old hardware for an "ugprade"

Your motherboard is not gonig to support a 6300 well, and flat out wont support an 8300 (besides E versions).
Buying a 6300 or 8300e will not give you much of any performance increase and just be throwing away good money after bad.

I am going to suggest you go with an AMD 6350FX. With that Corsair cooler, you'll never worry. I run mine on auto-overclock at 4.29 and idle in the 20C range, most times it's high 40s playing "Elite Dangerous" when in graphic intensive areas. That's a $100 USD CPU that requires nothing else and will do more than enough for you for now. An Intel build for a low-level CPU like an i3 really, to me, for that money is a parallel move and not worth the time and extra money.

Make sure your AiO cooler is actually working properly, if your temps are suddenly rising, it may not be performing as it should. I also love Zalman coolers and you can get a fine copper cooler for $20-30 USD and never look back.

Bieng in Brazil might change things some.
Price it out with your available vendors. In USA a new 4th gen i3 and baord will cost your MORE then the kaby lake setup despite buying 8gb of memory.

The 4th gen i3 setup will be a very mild step up from say an fx-6300, if you are going to go with 4th gen intel then I would really try to find an i5, even if used, to make it worthwhile.

First off it is not a parallel move as the kaby lake cpus are much stronger then a 6350 despite having 1 more core 2 more threads.
Secondly you spending $100 on 5 year old archeticture with no upgrade path. At least with intel kaby lake the OP can throw an i5 or i7 in latter and still have a very large performance bump. As I already said, dumping any more money into an fx platform in 2017 is just throwing away good money after bad.

Yeah, indeed buying that motherboard is a big regreat, but I guess I didn't have many options with the money I had when my Gygabite died without a warning an year and a half ago.

Not sure the difference between a AMD 6350FX and AMD 6300FX, but surelly would be an ok solution for now, untill I save money to make a whole new computer next year. I'm just about to start working in a new place and I'll have more money to ivnest on a computer later on, but for now I just want to play some casual games and league of legends with my GF without having the risk of my computer turning off from times to times.

Darn, you're fast! You replied him before me.

So yeah, I see your point. You really got me interested in the kaby lake. Not sure if I could afford mobo+cpu+ddr4 right now.
His suggestion would be only a cpu, and that's it. Like I said, next year or maybe even before, depnding on the busyness, I'd get a whole new computer with kaby lake indeed.

I'm still running an Asus 990fx Sabertooth from 2011 that is on it's second CPU and third GPU (GTX 770). Adding 8 extra GB of RAM was a huge help as was the SSD I upgraded to. It's all about budget and contentment. My plans are a new Ryzen CPU and the best of the GPUs come June/July after AMD's Vega release is tested and reviewed... along with the new mobo and RAM etc. After six years it's overhaul time.

Laureon, you should no trouble with a 63xx being pushed to 4.0+ if your cooler is working as it should. Follow your budget for now and set your long-term sights on what you really want... and can afford :)

My GF's computer was having similar issue. But I knew it was the cooler, so we got a new one, and her brother isntalled it. Now it works perfectly fine.
She advised me to try get a thermal paste and try it and see if that helps.

If you put your hand behind my computer, where the fan's cooler is, it's blowing some warm air. I believe if my cpu had hight temperature but with cool air escaping from the fan's cooler, I'd really say the coooler was not absorving its head properly.
Anyway, I'd give it a shot and try a thermal paste, and then maybe follow your idea with fx63**, as it'd be the cheapest solution for now. Later I can get an intel when thing$ get better, and maybe sell the old stuff.
I don't really need an awesme computer to play League of Legends or watch streaming. Sadly I don't have the time to play all my games so I wouldn't make a huge investment right now only to get hight FPS with good graphics while playing a couple of hours every 2 weeks..

EDIT: Btw, would AMD FX 8320E Octa Core work? I just found out its same price as the 6350 that you recommended me. Someone said as long as it E, it'd be suppported by my mobo, but still not the best option.

If your board is an AM3+, yes, all the FX chips will work. The thing with the 8300 series is foremost, HEAT. More energy and much hotter. For your mother board and likely the games you play, even the six core 6300 series is likely overkill. The 8000+ series are just more heat for little more gain. If your overclock is still in the 4.2 range, it doesn't matter which CPU you have. The 6300/6350 would be more than enough for the time being. Don't be seduced by the hot chick who will just burn you later, so to speak. :) Look at your overall system potential. The 8-core isn't really going to matter. Stick with the cooler 6300/6350 and most of all, apply new thermal paste then see how the temps go in NORMAL play. You don't need a stress test. Watch the temps. If they're still higher than you'd like, you can try that Zalman heat sink I mentioned.

You're doing the right thing following a budget for now. Know what is 'enough' CPU and system stability etc. and save up for a nice new build... just don't discount AMD when you are ready. Take your time, compare and find what suits your needs best in the long-term.

Thanks everyone for taking their time and helping me!

For now I'll go with fx6300, I'll let you ppl know what happens next after I get stuff done.
And then, in the future, I come back here and cry for help when I get enought for a intel build!

That is completely not true. There is 95w tdp fx chips, 125w tdp chips and 225w tdp chips.
Entry level boards typically only support 95w tdp CPUs.
Most all 970 chipset boards support 125w cpus and all of the 990 chipsets support it
Very few boards supported the horrific abomination 225w cpus that were better at beaing a space heater then as a high performance CPU.

NOW in this case his specific board does actually support 125w tdp processors.

Going from an 8120 to a 6300/6350 is not going to be noticable improvement in any way, make more difference to his wallet then anything.

@OP if you are doing any sort of an overclock on the 8120 that could be your issue as those lower end boards do not have good VRMs and will cause heat issues among other problems.

Not really going to try overclock anything, I just want anything that works with what I got right now. I had the idea of going to intel, but then, having to also get a new memory, is what made it way too much for my wallet.

Not sure if I'm allowed to post any URL in here, or else I'd post the website (in portuguese) where I'd get my stuff, as they are one of best sellers in here for a good price.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3113769/fps-stutter.html

I had a thread in here, and I followed those steps.

I used to OC before my older mobo died, With this one, after those issues mencioned in the older thread, I actually disabled some cores, and it fixed my fps drops. Someone did tell me that it was a temporally solution, and eventually I'd get heating problems, and guess that's what is happening now.

Tonight my brother is bringing me a thermal paste, and then I'll look around and check a tutorial how to apply it properly and see how it works for me.

EDIT: Not sure how I can check the pumps.

And now, reading the old thread, he recommended me to get another MOBO, and that's the one he talked about: M5A97 EVO R2.0

And then I found this:
http://www.kabum.com.br/produto/79456/placa-mae-asus-p-amd-am3-atx-m5a97-r2-0-4x-ddr3-crossfirex-usb-3-0-header-com-e-tpm-spdif-bios-flashback-/?tag=M5A97
ASUS p/ AMD AM3+ ATX M5A97 R2.0,

And then, I can see it's about the same price of the fx 6300. Maybe it's a better solution?

EDIT:

If that helps:

So, yesterday evening, I cleaned my watercooler's radiator and it was full of dusk, I thought it would help, but it didn't. At least now it's clean.

Seens like the real problem is my motherboard, for it being a low end or something.

I checked prices for an OK mobo, and it seens to be slightly cheaper than fx6300.

Would you guys recommend me get this?

GIGABYTE p/ AMD AM3+ ATX GA-970A-D3P

http://www.kabum.com.br/produto/45733/placa-mae-gigabyte-p-amd-am3-atx-ga-970a-d3p-crossfirex-uefi-dualbios-ddr3-sata-6gb-s-usb-3-0

Would that be compactible with my fx 8120? Would it probly reduce my CPU temperature? Thanks for all the help!

I followed someone suggestion, and got a fx6300, and my temperature dropped to 45, from 83. Guess I should be fine now untill next year when I get a new build :)
Tyvm for your time, guys!
