Is it worth upgrading my GPU or CPU?

Hi there,
I'm looking for a bit of upgrade advice.

I thought I had a pretty good setup but its starting to get a little behind. My PC is used mostly for gaming and I want to be able to run newer games on maximum settings. Recent games like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Overwatch start to really decrease in framerate if I put the setting up to max. I also want to be able to take advantage of my Steam Link. I have fast wired internet but the quality isn't always that great when I play games on it.

Here's what I currently have:
Radeon HD 7870 GPU
Intel Core i5-4590 CPU
8GB Ram

What would be some good upgrade options? I guess my budget goes up to about £700. Are there any worthwhile upgrades I could make or is it worth holding off another year? I spotted that the ASUS RADEON RX 480 seems to be considered good value at the moment but would that give me a worthwhile boost?

Thanks alot for any advice, I'm sure you guys and gals get hammered with these kind of posts!

I think as far as the money goes you should focus on a GPU upgrade. Your CPU is still pretty good, and yes in the next 2 years or so you will be upgrading the whole system.

The games that you are talking about put a heavy load on the GPU (some games are CPU heavy, some are GPU, some are both, Looking at what kind of demand those put on, is why im telling you to go for GPU), and since you are saying you are having some issues, that should be your primary upgrade.

for your system, I'd personally get an RX480. Of course a 1070/1080 would be much better, using all of your budget should theoretically yield best results, but it doesn't exactly work that way int he end. 1070 would be the highest tier GPU I would think about putting in your...

Hello, you have a few options to do an upgrade i would consider first of all a gpu upgrade if you feel that yours is falling behind, you can get a gtx 1060, 1070 or even a 1080 that will be a noticeable upgrade (not informed about amd offers but pretty sure they have something comparable out there) if the games or apps you want to run require a bettr cpu you can get the i7 4790 without replacing the motherboard, and finally you can add more ram to spare up to 16Gb of dedicated memmory. hope this helps.

Other things would be... is, how good is your monitor? If you have just a regular non fancy monitor... the 1080 would be somewhat of a waste, the 1070 will not look as nice as it could, this is just part of the other factors.

RX480 + ram + SSD drive? (do you have one?)

this'll last you for a while longer, then you will upgrade full system anyways
