I recently purchased an ASUS RT-AC88U for my new 200 mbps down / up. When I am not using my router i get the correct speeds. When i use my router I get 100 mbps down/up. I called ASUS and they couldn't help. We reset the router numerous different ways, tried different firmware, etc.. Not sure what to do.

This sounds like the port is not negotiating to 1g. Most times this is the cable. Some device, maybe your pc, can tolerate cables that are just slightly defective.

When you using the router you have 2 cables that can be the problem. Your pc should tell you if the port negotiated to 1g or 100m. Maybe plug both cables into lan ports on the router just for testing. Your pc will logically be directly connected to the wall jack but will physically pass though the lan ports on your router.

There is not a lot you can try other than buy some new cat5e cables and hope to get lucky. The only other things are defective ports in equipment which would be really bad. There is of course a tiny chance there is a problem with the in wall...

I don't have a modem. the internet company came and installed a wall plate in my apartment. When I plug an Ethernet cord directly into the wall to my PC i get 200/200. When I plug my router into it I get 100/100. They say on the site not to use a modem.

If this was a house I would recommend you cut off a inch and reterminate it but in a apartment that is not such a good idea.

I have an RT-AC88U and can confirm that it is very cable sensitive. I just replaced the cable between my modem and router with a cat 6 because of issues I was having and it made all the difference. I'm also running Merlin firmware on mine, 380.65_2, which performs better than the stock asus firmware. Be aware that asus is about to release a new version 7378 to replace the 7266 with some fixes if you want to stay with their firmware but I don't know exactly what issues it addresses. Over at small net builder forums there is an asus specific router area where Merlin hangs out and addresses user concerns as he develops firmware for the various routers.
