So I purchased a ASRock Fatality H170 Performance motherboard a while ago because their website claims it can overclock (or at the very least made it easy to get confused) and upon purchase, a look into the manual confirmed that it can by showing the H170 bios with many CPU overclocking features. I didnt need to overclock right away and put the idea aside. Come a week or two ago and I have the need to overclock. Come to find out I cant overclock it (I even made a thread here asking about it). After talking with Tech support they confirmed this is a printing error with the manual and the website (very unclearly) refers to the DDR4 Ram overclocking. They said I can however RMA for a new motherboard (currently confirming with them that ill get a new one that can overclock).

Not sure what motherboard ill be getting but I have a few questions.

Im looking for possible watercooling (I currently have a CM Hyper T3 Evo I believe, the one similar to the 212) and figured id ask for opinions and tips. I have never owned watercooling before, I have also never removed a CPU from a motherboard before. If anyone has any tips or reccomendations id like to know since removing a CPU is terrifying due to how easily those gold pins can bend. If I stick with my air cooling, im shooting for an easy 4GHz but if I get watercooling I plan on going up to 4.5GHz or so if I can. Ive also never overclocked a CPU but ive done moderate research. Again, any tips and reccomendations is appreciated. I send in my motherboard on monday if they get back to me properly.

That one MSI i post before is incorrect, it will work with 6600k but need bios update to work,
just get this one https://pcpartpicker.com/product/gpH48d/msi-motherboard-z170agamingprocarbon so you dont bother with updates.
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/8rvZxr/asus-z170-pro-gamingaura-atx-lga1151-motherboard-z170-pro-gamingaura this one good too. Has 10 power phases for more stable overclocking, also RGB! But personally i would never go for expensive motherboard, 80$ and 160$ wont make any difference in fps, it may give u extra 100mhz from your cpu overclocking. Not worth extra 80$
You shouldnt get...

Hey, you can easily hit 4.5GHZ with your CM hyper cooler. I personally have used 212 evo to cool down my 6700k at 4.6GHZ, temperatures were pretty low.
I would not recommend any water AIO cooler for couple of things, it has worse performance/price ratio (you will have to pay lot more to outperform AIR cooler, most cheap aio water coolers will perform same or worse than air, most coolers will work louder due to fans+pump noise, has much lower lifespan.
Only custom loop water cooler will perform better than air cooler. If you have at least 200$ go for it then.
You dont have to remove CPU to change your cooler.

some CPU overclock better than others. It's called the silicon lottery
A wise man would find out how good their CPU is BEFORE spending a fortune on a better cooler.
See if you can hit 4.4 to 4.5 Ghz as makentox says....

Alright, thanks for the advice. Anything I should be careful of when overclocking? Im still waiting for the ASRock support to email me about the motherboard situation.

You can find tons of guides on the internet, here is examples:

Just tips, dont go too high in voltage for 24/7 use, under 1.420vcore is save, 1.360v or less preferably. Ofc you cant go as high as 1.420v if your temperature is too high, so keep monitoring your temperature so it doesnt exceed 86C (during stress test) or up to 80C on 24/7 normal use.

the heat produced by a CPU is basically Speed x Vcore x Vcore.
To go faster requires more Vcore
This is why overclockers end up with more and more extravagant forms of cooling to go just a little faster...

When overclocking, especially with a normal cooler, always keep your Vcore as low as possible, and watch your temperatures.

An increase of Vcore of 0.1V generally allows you to go 200Mhz faster. 1.4Volts is the sensible limit.

When you reach your maximum speed with your Hyper T3 Evo, which will be temperature limited, you should be able to guess how fast you could go if you had a water cooler, which would be voltage limited by the 1.4V maximum....

So, the ASRock tech support is awful and their RMA is very sketchy. As such, what motherboard would you recommend?
Currently have an i5-6600k, a GTX970, 16GB of DDR4 ram (two 8GB ram cards). If you need any more information about that, feel free to ask. Just looking for a decent motherboard that I can overclock and rely on for quite a bit.

Well have they replied? I dont think its a good idea to buy a new motherboard if they wont accept old one.
Well asrock makes good motherboards as well as asus, but one of the most expensive.

I own asus z170-a, very good mobo,, so far not a single problem, got 5GHZ on it :) But not the best looking...
If you not going to overclock too high u could buy even cheaper motherboard.

You shouldnt get these fancy rgb motherboards if u dont have transparent case (windowed) then ofc u must pay extra to look good.
