Is a OC GTX 1080 overkill for 1440p at 60hz?

Im asking this because Im looking at a LGA1151 motherboard that is around for $50 that cant be OC'd and another one for $120 with a OC option for my 1080 gpu. I want to play games at 1440p and have a constant 60fps for triple A games is enough for me. Is there a reason I should OC my 1080 or will it be an overkill for 60hz? Thank you!

Overclocking your GPU is independent of the chipset of the Motherboard, you can OC a Graphics Card on any Motherboard. As for the GPU i'd say a GTX 1080 is a good choice for 1440p 60 FPS if you want High/Ultra settings. A GTX 1070 is capable at most games pretty strong in 1440p too but the GTX 1080 will allow more headroom for higher settings. I doubt you will need an Overclock in most situations but the opportunity will always be there should the need/want arise. Hope this helps :)

You might see some small benefit from OCing the card, although you won't "need" to OC it to have a good experience. Someone with a 1080 should be able to confirm/deny this.

But the motherboard doesn't determine whether or not you can OC your graphics card?
