Hi,
I have a Asus X556ub and according to the specs it has 2 rams 6Gb in total, one of them is 4Gb 1600mhz that is built in and another one is Apacer 2Gb Dual channel 12800 1600Mhz that is removable.also based on the specs i can upgrade the ram up to 12gb!
So i went to buy a 8gb ram, but in markets there is only single channel rams.now i have 3 questions:
1. should i buy 1600mhz ram to more compatibility? or higher frequency is acceptable?
2. can i put a single channel 8gb instead my 2gb dual channel? is there any different in speed?
3. Apacer or Adata has lifetime guaranty, are these brands trustworthy or i should buy corsair or geil or something?
thank you so much

Solution
if the laptop already has 4 gbs soldered at 1600mhz, the new module will be forced to work at 1600mhz

it is possible also that it will not operate on dualchannel, it is a real possibility, but that is not the end of the world

12 gbs are better than 6, especially knowing that the gpu usually eats up to 1 gb of those 6

the laptop only has 1 ram slot right?

so you can put a 8 gbs module?

that is all the latop can do, if there is not two slots in it, you can't buy a ram kit with 2 x4gb moduels, you don't have where to put them

if laptop decides that it can or cannot do dualchanel with those two modules, the soldered one and the 8 gbs you bought, it is fine, what matters is that system is stable and you have more than 6 gbs of ram

According to crucial your laptop will only take a 4gb ram module. It is possible that it will accept more but you will need to research people who have tried with your specific laptop.

Here is the cruciial recommendations page, it says you should get 1600mhz ram and also needs to be 1.35v (there is 1.5, and 1.65v ram as well so make sure you get 1.35v): http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/ASUS/x556ub

FYI: Often the OEM will create a spec sheet for what is avaliable at the time for ram, a couple years latter higher quatities of ram are available and they just dont go back and update the spec sheet.

So it comes down to if the system is hard limited to 4gb in bios/hardware, or if 4gb was just the biggest chip they made at the time the laptop was released.

Thanks for yout reply, So there is no problem to put a single channel 8gb?
If i buy a 1866Mhz 8Gb ram does laptop put it in flex mode?

You are right, take a look at these pictures,i take a snapshot from Piriform about my ram specs.and pictures of my soldered ram(hynix 4Gb) and free slot ram(Apacer 2Gb).
According to your information the best option is add a hynix 8Gb 1.35v 1600Mhz i think.

5.43 because the gpu on the cpu takes borrowed some megabytes, seems that is using around 512 megabytes, add that to those 5.4 and you get the 6 gbs

the speed is automatically detected by the bios

storage is not ram, do you need storage too?

perhaps less, some gpus when detect more ram, take borrowed more ram, so if the gpu allows and decides will take 1 gb

perhaps 768 megabytes so you get 11.2gbs of ram available, depends on the gpu and the system

what matters the most is get the right ram module that is as friendly as that 2 gb module you removed so your experience with it is good, no problems diagnosing and making it work
