Need advice to upgrade my build

I recently bought some games on steam that are newer than skyrim, witcher 3, and Titanfall(games I been playing for quite some time). Steam has a sale on a bunch of games so I take advantage and buy a few. Rise of Tomb Raider and Watch Dogs 2 are the only two games I had completely installed.
I played Tomb Raider and noticed when loading new scenery, cutscenes, or auto saving performance slows down drastically. Video stutters and sometimes even freezes. I lowered display settings and it gave me better performance but still stuttered a bit and I made it through the game. Now I wanted to play watch dogs 2 and the game doesn't even load. Ubisoft icon comes on but with a message in the corner saying my CPU does not meet the minimum requirements of Intel i5 2400/ AMD FX 6120. I never checked minimum requirements since my pic has always been good enough for my needs. I use my PC mainly for games. No video editing. I don't store videos or pics. But now it seems I need to upgrade. But I don't know what to get to keep up with the times simply because I could spend up to $1000 in components and get a monster pc but I don't want to spend that if I will be fine with $500 worth. My current build is:

Gigabyte GA-MA790FXT-UD5P
AMD PHENOM II x3 720
6144 RAM
AMD RADEON r9 270
Samsung 600 gb ata
Cosair 550w PSU
Connected to 50 " Samsung via hdmi.

How should I go about buying components? How powerful should the components be for my needs? Which components should be enough to last me plenty years as my current build?
I was thinking of going with an Intel build since based on many articles they are better just more expensive. Is that a good idea?

Solution
I would go buy yourself a i5 7600k or wait for Ryzen 5 to come out. The R9 270 would do fine for now but I would upgrade later. You would also have to buy different RAM.

The R9 270 is almost as good as the GTX 1050. With the rest of your budget you could go with a 1070/80/80ti

This is better if you don't want to clock and it's better for longevity
