Since 1080Ti installation, PC takes 10 seconds before it powers on

Hi guys,

So after installing my 1080Ti FE gpu, it takes at least 10 seconds before my PC boots up after I turn on from the mains socket. After this, the PC functions perfectly fine.

My PSU is Corsair 760W 80+ Platinum. Mobo is Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP ATX LGA1150 with the latest F7 bios firmware.

The gpu uses a 8+6 pin PCIe power connectors, which leaves 2 pins exposed. My Previous gpu [MSI 980Ti] used 8+8 pins.

Another thing I notice is that once my PC does power up, the screen flickers a few times during bios boot as though the input source is being changed or something. Also, as of late, sometimes when I try to enter bios it just shows a blank screen.

PC now takes about 2.5 minutes to boot.

[EDIT 19/04/17] These are the things I've tried so far:
- Reseated gpu
- Reset bios [am already on the latest bios version]
- Stock CPU vs overclocked CPU had no bearing
- Increased voltage [VRIN] to mobo from Auto to 1.85
- Disabled integrated graphics

[EDIT 20/04/17]
- Tried two dedicated 6+2 PCIe cables [I don't have 6 pin only cable]
- Disabled legacy boot mode and enabled UEFI boot only
- Tried new CMOS battery
- Removed gpu and tried to boot PC as is but it still didn't boot, so that eliminates gpu issue.
- Set "PCIe slot configuration" to gen3 and gen2 in bios

[EDIT 21/04/17]
- PSU replacement incoming tomorrow, courtesy of Amazon's awesome CS. Fingers crossed.

[EDIT 22/04/17]
- SOLVED! It was the PSU.

Solution
If you reinstall your previous graphics card, does this issue persist? Your power supply should be more than adequate for that graphics card, however if I were you i'd swap out the psu just to confirm that isn't causing the delayed start.

Shouldn't be a voltage issue, as recently I've been overclocking my CPU as well. So have increased my vcore [1.275v] and vrin [1.85] voltages. That didn't resolve the boot issue.

Suppose I could try a new battery...

Am already on the latest bios firmware.

I have tried reseating before, didnt help.

I haven't tried dedicated pcie cables. Though I wouldn't imagine that causing a problem as my previous card was maxwell (980ti) and new one is pascal so I believe the power draw is less?

I've only one PCIex16 v3.0 lane. My other is a PCIex4. What if I was to disable integrated in the bios?

Sold my previous gpu already, so can't test with that. These are the things I'm due to try as my PC now takes longer than a minute to boot so I must resolve:

- New CMOS battery
- New power cable/fuse
- New PSU

I do have legacy boot mode, enabled by default. what value was you going to recommend for this?

Graphics is indeed set to PCIe 1.

Also tried disabled integrated graphics, didn't help.

I've read some other threads where people have said a new PSU resolved their issue. Guess I'll have to borrow a multimeter to test PSU volts...

ice2kewl In addition to connecting the PSU to the graphics card, did you also connect an additional 8 pin PCIe cable to the motherboard's 8 pin ATX 12 volt port?

Also, from your initial description it sounds like you're running two 8 pin PCIe cables to the graphics card, thereby leaving two pins exposed. Do you happen to have an 8+6 pin PCI cable to use instead? I'm not sure if it'll make a difference but it'll only take you 30 seconds to try.

Yup, I've the 24pin and 8pin going from PSU to the mobo.

Last night I tried two dedicated 6+2 PCIe cables into the GPU, didn't resolve. I don't have a 6 pin only cable...

I found this customer review of the Gigabyte GA-Z87-D3HP on Amazon. Does the description below relate to your issue?

""""UPDATE"""" DO NOT DOWNLOAD THE DESKTOP BIOS GIGABYTE SOFTWARE! It will add 45 to 60 seconds to your boot and you will have continuous problems with it such as reading your CPU temperature incorrectly by 200 degrees! I scratched my head over the last year wondering why my booting was so slow and finally read a post where someone had stated issue resolved once they deleted this software. Same for me. Do not download their bloatware. Also, Board has been steady keeping my memory at the right speed now.

After eventually booting up, I did make that change. However, I didn't get around to testing it as I have to test after a cold boot. Will check today. I also noticed another bios setting called "PCIe Slot Configuration", which had options "Auto, gen1, gen2, gen3". It's currently set to Auto. If UEFI boot don't work, I'll try this setting.
Thanks

[EDIT] Another thing I notice is that once my PC does power up, the screen flickers a few times as though the input source is being changed. Also, as of late, sometimes when I try to enter bios it just shows a blank screen.

No, that issue to referring to slow boot time. My issue is that my PC doesn't power up at all until after about 1 or 2 minutes [before it was 10-15 seconds]. I also don't have that desktop bios software installed.

Before I had a maxwell card, MSI 980Ti which I'm pretty sure uses more power than a pascal 1080Ti.

Understood. Seems there is 1 of 3 culprits:

(1) video card

(2) motherboard

(3) power supply

Can you try the graphics card in another build? Do you have a spare power supply that you could try? I don't know what's causing your issue, but it seems that process of elimination is your best bet at this point.

Nope, that didn't work. I then tested the PCIe slot configuration setting. I set to gen3, saved and exited. The PC turned off and didn't power on for a couple minutes. Then I set to gen2, saved and exited. PC powered off and turned on after a second. So I will now leave on gen2 and test after a cold boot. Hopefully it's this!

[EDIT] PCIe slot config didn't help :-/

Yday I removed the gpu and tried booting. PC didn't boot so suppose that eliminates gpu issue.

I will order the same PSU from Amazon and test that. I hope it is the PSU and not mobo, because this mobo works brilliant with Oculus Rift sensors.
