Since most games don't require Ryzen but do the FX-9xxx, is it best to stick with the FX?

a co-worker said I wasted my money buying a FX-9xxx series...that I should have stuck with 8xxx

your coworker is damn right.

the fx 9*** equals alot of of trouble, crashes black screens and alot more.
in order to let the fx work you need a 100+ dollar liquid cooler a 150+ dollar motherboard and a 80+ dollar psu.

and for what? it performs as equal as a silly pentium for 70 dollars.

The Ryzen CPUs are far superior to the old FX chips.

Games just list the minimum required to run them, which is often the FX chips.

As for the FX-9XXX CPUs, those are just slightly higher clocked versions of the FX-83XX. And not really worth the extra cost.

Your co-worker is both right and wrong. It's true you wasted money on the 9xxx and yes you would have been better off sticking with the 83xx. He's also right and wrong about how many cores a game currently need since many games are not able to utilize the amount of cores\threads the Ryzen offers but that will eventually change. The fact of the matter is even if the majority of the games out there will not take advantage of the full potential of Ryzen it still performs far better than anything AMD has had for a long time.

If your gaming switch to Intel no AMD processor can match the performance. If it's for work programs that can use all the cores then Zen is the better option.
I dont put much stock in when people say games will start using a bunch of cores they have been saying that for 10 years.
For the 9xxx chips it's just a overclocked 8350 (5 years old) with a massive power draw.

You also need to remember that most Motherboards cannot support the 220W power draw. There have been cases of people's build literally catching on fire.

If you can get an exotic water/L2N solution maybe you can do it for the lols? There is not much point with Ryzen being out.
