i play online video games. what i dont understand is when i run a speed test i get a 30ms ping on 50mg per second dsl line. there are 4cell phones and 2 computers running off the network am thinking i need to get a seperate router rather then using the device the isp provides maybe just using it as a modem and connect all the lines to an add on router?

am really just guesing on what to make my ping better as it is 130+ in game all the time on elder scrolls online

I dont know about your country but in the USA at best you get a guy at Best Buy just trying to sell you the highest priced router he can sucker you into (wihtout really understanding anything technical about it) to someone at Wal-Mart that doesnt even know the difference between a router and a modem.

Need to know budget and what your needs are for the router.
I have one in mind for $80 that is quite powerfull but overkill if you are not doing anything on local network, only going out to internet, and no idea if that...
Connect to a server that is closer. OR get a different ISP
Not all games have servers that are closer = you can't improve your ping in every game.

A different internet provider may help but that's fairly extreme just to decrease your ping.

Back in the days of dialup gaming you would have been considered an LPB (Low Ping Bastard).
Dialup connections often had gaming pings from 350 - 200 (Not pretty, and that slow connection coined a new term that is constantly misused today.. "LAG".)

buying a better router then the one provided by your povider is (most of the time) a better idea. what also ireases ping is your connection to the provider.
in short, when playing a game your "packets" (files from pc to the other side) take the following route. PC-->router-->provider-->servers from said game
i dont know what your connection is in your neighborhood. i've got a glass fiber connection to my provider (which is very very very very good) and my pc is connected via a ethernet cable (wired) which is also very fast. where the servers of the game are located also makes a diffrence. i live in europe so if i were to connect to a american server then my "pakets" have to cross an entire freaking ocean to get there.
my ping, according to a online speedtest, is 3ms 205.08mbps down and 210mbps up.
down=download and up=upload.
hope this makes you wiser in finding your problem

Where the game is depends the most I feel. I play on a lot of San Jose servers which is rather close to me and my ping is usually in the 20-30s. If I connect to a TX or NY state server then my ping will go to 50-80ms or so. Just try to connect to more local servers if you have the option.

In general having something better then the (usually garbage) router the ISP provides is always a good idea.

Now what you have to realize is that ping is the total time it takes to get a response from your PC to the destination.
Thus if speedtest.net's server is 50 miles away and the gaming server is 1000 miles away....your going to have much higher ping to the gaming server.

DSL in general is always going to be a slower connection that is more susceptable to both peak usage and distance from hub vs other intenret types (cable and fiber).

Ways to decrease ping:
Use wired only connections, no wifi
Get a decent router with good WAN to LAN throughput
Get a faster internet service
Use a different server for destination (not always possible and which point what you get is what you get).

It is highly unlikely the router is your bottleneck. Unless it is extremely old it can easily keep up with a DSL line. Most times the symptom of a overloaded router is not higher ping time but packet loss.

Even if you were to completely eliminate the delay on the hop between your router and the ISP router maybe you would get 10ms. But most that delay is overhead in the DSL and distance so you likely could not even detect the delay a router put in the connection.

Your delay to the game servers mean you likely live far away from them...or your traffic follows a long path in the internet. Pretty much the only way to solve this problem is to move and live in the city that has the servers data center and then you must use the same ISP as the company that owns the server

if i were you then i would go online and check for nearby stores and ask around to what they think is a good router for a certain amout of money as i have no idea of what kind of routers are being sold in the usa

If you are wanting super cheap (like $30 or less) then there is really nothing that will offer improved performance over ISP modem/router.
