Hello, I'm going to be joining the military soon, and I want to game when I get to my base/in tech school. Should I build a gaming desktop or buy a gaming laptop? I'll list my personal pros and cons:

Pros of desktop:
*More power for less $$$
*Best performance
*Good for overclocking

Cons of desktop:
*Cannot take it with me wherever I go
*If I get deployed it will sit and collect dust.
*Hard to ship without breaking it.
*Bulky
*Limited space w/ dorms/barracks

Pros of laptop
*Due to Pascal, same performance when it comes to laptop / desktop performance
*Can take it anywhere
*Can bring on deployments

Cons of laptop:
*Less price/performance ratio
*Heat may throttle the hardware
*Not really upgradable
*Small screen compared to desktops.
Which one should I get based on this? Thanks!

Have you considered the option of get a mATX mobo with a smaller case as well?
That way it become really easy to carry it around. Not as easy as a laptop, but much easier than e Full size Case desktop.

But if you are really moving around, spending more on the laptop is wiser even if you get lower performance, it will still be nicely playable nonetheless. Just keep in check the heat with some peripherals then you have no problem with that either.

So, IMO laptop is wiser with your conditions

For military you will have a lot of time where you cant take the desktop with you.

I would say the laptop for your situation.

While you have lower performance (at least without greatly increasing the cost) and no upgradeability, with the laptop you at least can take it with you. THe desktop is going to be upgradeable but if you are on many depolyments and dont use it much then you wont get much use out of it before it is 3 generations old and needs a full upgrade.
