Networking - Does my outdoor cat 6 cable need to be shielded

I need to run cat6 ethernet along the outside my house about 50 ft. It will run alongside phone and tv cables which I assume is okay, but the point where it returns into the house is a few inches from the main power line from the street which runs down the side of the house and into the basement. I will use outdoor rated cable, but should it also be shielded because of the power line? If shielded, does it need to be grounded, and how hard is that to do?

You pretty much would have to wrap it around the electrical cable to even think to get interference. You really need a telco grade ground that you can connect the cable to on both ends. It can be a safety risk to hook the ends to the electrical ground. You run the risk that a electrical short might decide to use the shielding rather than the wire in the wall. The electrical ground also tends to have more possibility of noise so it can actually inject interference.

This is one of those things you fix after you know for sure you have a problem. It is extremely rare to get interference in ethernet. Most time shielded cable is installed to prevent the ethernet from interfering with sensitive equipment like in hospitals rather than...
