I have a win10 desktop and a vista laptop. Both can connect to internet thru my wireless router/modem. However, I cannot get the laptop to do a windows update. I use the laptop infrequently & always try to update vista & antivirus prior to a trip when I know it will be used. Control Panel says last update was 11-4-16. I leave it running overnight & it seems stuck on "checking for updates". I have it set to automatically d/l & install updates, but that doesn't work. I go thru control panel, but that runs forever w/o updating.

I've tried all of the above with laptop hardwired to router/modem & get the same non-updating results.

How do I tell "for sure" if the laptop if I have a hardwired or wireless connection to router/modem? It automatically connects wirelessly at startup. Even when I disconnect from wireless, it still says connected with network name. It is physically the same router/modem hardware. How do I tell if it is wired or wireless?

You seem to be asking the wrong question here, are you are trying to fix a Windows update issue or to find out how your computer is connected to the router? For the connection, pretty simple, is there a network cable going to your computer? If not and you can get online and there is a wifi icon in the system try that states "connected to mynetworkname" then you are on WiFi.

Here it is July 7, 2017 & I get an email that "somebody" has picked the solution to my question to be a post that I "asked the wrong question". Maybe I should have submitted 2 questions.
1. Why did it take so long (almost 2 months) for me to receive this notice?
2. My question was (& is), since I've found that wireless is slower than wired & both seem to be hanging, does connecting a wired override the "auto" wireless connection? In other words, maybe there's a ton of updates & it just takes a looooooooong time to D/L & install . . . but that doesn't seem to be the case.

3. The 1st reply (3 months ago) to my question which I never got a notification of said "Goiogle has a million solutions for this.".
...I've tried Googling . . . none worked for me. I'm not a guru. Maybe I should have stated that, but these answers seem to imply that is obvious.

I therefore resubmit my original question . . .
restated . . . How can I D/L & install Vista updates, instead of "hanging"? As I said, I'm not a guru. Simple, plain English, please.

You probably got the replies to the post, either the email was missed or it went into your junk email.

If you already tried things that did not work, you should list what you tried. We can only work on what you put in the post, first assumption is that you did nothing past just try the automatic updates.

There is a bunch of things to check on in this post https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_vista-update/updates-not-working-it-has-been-searching-for/92cd6922-17f6-4730-b46b-91a480b95dd3 There is no way to know what will work in your case from there and unfortunately you have to be able to read though that and understand what KB packages are, to download them and install them. I have a fix for Windows 7 that works pretty much all the time, but it would not be the same for Vista.
