Hello, my question is regarding precautions that should be taken to protect my laptop screen display when connecting an external monitor via HDMI output.
I ask this because, my screen fused and would not respond 1 week ago when I turn on the laptop. Like the laptop would work but only if HDMI-external monitor was connected (in other words my laptop screen was not responding).

This may have happened because my laptop wen to sleep while the HDMI was connected ( I do my best to avoid this but happened) The specs of laptops are at the bottom in blue

As a result, I had to order a new screen for my laptop (laptopscreens.com; grade A+) and I installed it. It's working great. My only concern is what can I do to avoid this in the future or was this just a freak accident?

1.

Is there a way to connect the HDMI or unplug the HDMI? should I shut down my laptop and then disconnect HDMI.
2.
What about sleep and screen turning off due to idle time? I am worried and as a result, I only shut down my laptop every 6 hours. I do not put it to sleep/hibernate and I have selected ' Never' for 'Turn off display' in Power options in Windows. disabled

Please advise if what I am doing will make it worse or it is good that I am taking this precautions?

Also, I apologize if this is posted in the wrong section; I could not decide whether to post this under graphics or monitors section.

Thank you for all responses.

I would go into your power options, and set the display to shut off after 30 minutes of non-activity. It won't cause the laptop to sleep or hibernate, but it'll help prevent "burn-in" on the monitor/display and save some power.

As far as plugging in or disconnecting the HDMI...it shouldn't matter if the laptop is already on or not, if you plug it in while the PC is on, it should just auto-detect the display and activate it.

Your laptop going to sleep isn't going to permanently disable your onboard screen, it sounds to me like it was a freak coincidence. I would go into your power settings and prevent the laptop from sleeping, just set it to shut down the screen after a given amount of time. How often do you work on the laptop on battery power ONLY?

Thank you so much for your response, pohemi.

Can you tell me how I can do autoshutdown? Like I only see auto hibernate and sleep in settings.

Also, I have the Lenovo Battery threshold activated; So my battery automatically stops charging at 60% in order to preserve it and extend it's overall life.
In other words, I work long hours on my laptop but it is connected with AC cord; I also never use HDMI extension monitor while laptop is on battery. I only do it while it is connected to AC power supply.
