Folders not showing files, but they're still there

A folder in my External Hard Drive is currently showing nothing, despite this folder having files and folders in it.
When I open the folder in question, which is named "Pictures", it opens to a blank folder. It looks like I've created a new folder and opened it before putting anything in it. If I right click and bring up the Properties, it says that the size is 0 bytes and that it contains 0 folders and 0 files. However if I go to the address bar and type in one of the folder names that I know is suppose to be in this folder, then it will take me to that folder, just the same as if I had simply found and clicked on the folder from the Pictures folder.
If I try and create a new folder with the same name as one of the ones that already exists, I get an error message telling me that there's already a folder with that name.

I have gotten an error alert that told me that a folder or files were corrupted and that I should run chkdsk, which I did. I've also gone to Command Prompt and run sfc scannow.
Neither of these seem to have done anything.
And I've checked my folder options in relation to Hidden Files and they're set to show all hidden files and folders.

As far as I can tell, this is the only folder on the hard drive with these problems.

My PC is about 7 to 8 years old, and it's OS is XP. The hard drive is a 1TB Western Digital My Book Essentials External Hard Drive that I've had and use with no real problems since late 2011.

Please help, because this agonizingly frustrating.
