Hello I'm just trying to get a quick rough idea if this is normal. I have a i5 6600k overclocked to 4.5 ghz which is rock solid paired with a Gtx 1070. I've always played games with vsync on which we all know locks the fps at 60 and never had to much of a problem except for the annoying input lag and random small stutter that I find often times goes along with vsync.

I have recently decided to look into eventually getting a monitor with adaptive sync which will most likely have a higher refresh rate so i decided to turn vsync off so I could try running games at a higher fps which currently I have capped at 100 fps.

I have noticed on games like Black Ops 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider at 1080p with settings on high at 100 fps the i5 6600k will often times hit 100% which causes the Gtx 1070 to drop to pretty much 0% usage and cause huge fps drops down to 10-15 fps for like 1-2 seconds then it jumps back up. Is this normal?

This will happen sporadically and doesn't seem to be as severe at 60 fps, but even at 60 fps I notice large fps drops occasionally on certain titles. Is this some kind of a bottleneck?

I have had similar problems like this in the past but have since replaced everything in my computer except for my PSU is it possible that it's a potential problem?

Any help would would be greatly appreciated thanks!

a number of people seem to either be ignorant of the fact or simply dont want to admit it but a 6600k will bottleneck a 1070 at 1080p. look on youtube, youll find a bunch of videos showing 100% cpu usage coinciding with gpu usage drops. particularly in in cpu intensive games. your options are... stick to 60fps(though as games get more demanding the bottleneck will hinder you), play at 1440p, or upgrade to an i7(which is what i did because i plan on upgrading my gpu sooner rather than later).

"mrobscura" I really appreciate you taking time to respond. I kind of figured that there was some kind of bottleneck happening but I just wanted to get other input before I decided to spend any more money. I'm just wondering seeing how you said you got the i7 if you don't notice these kind of problems?

I guess my biggest dilemma in the future will be on whether I should go Ryzen or i7? I know the i7 7700k currently has better fps performance in most games but the Ryzen line seems to be more future proof because of the higher amount of cores. Also if I remember correctly the AM4 socket was said to be more future proof as well meaning not having to buy a new motherboard every generation which would be nice.

since you already have an 1151 mobo you might as well go with a i7 imo. why swap out the motherboard and all? especially considering ryzen doesnt offer anything on the gaming front. and as for ryzen being "future proof"... talk of games taking advantage of more core/threads as been going on for years and in even cpu intensive games the 4 core 8 thread i7s still hang with, if not out perform, intels own higher core count chips. and besides theres no guarantee the so called optimization thatll bring improved ryzen performance will ever happen. all we can go on is whats available now, and as things are the i7 simply outperforms ryzen in gaming. unless you plan to do heavy multitasking a 6700k or 7700k should last years as far as a gaming rig is concerned.
