PC freezes during intensive games

Hello. This is driving me crazy. This is a relatively new build which I've been using without a GPU for a couple months, and just last week I got the GPU, and now I'm having this issue.

After an average of around 30 mins of running a graphic intensive game (ie The Witcher 3, max'd Overwatch) or Heaven benchmark test, my whole PC freezes, and either reboots after a few seconds or stays frozen until I force shutdown. (The first few times it did the former - freeze and reboot - but actually for the most part since then it just stays frozen.)

On less intensive games (Brothers: Tale of Two Sons, Heroes of the Storm) it never freezes.

I have tested extensively for days to try and find out what exactly is causing the issue, but don't feel like I've gotten anywhere.

Temperatures seem fairly fine. CPU and GPU get to a max of about 75c during gaming.

Things I've tried:
-cpu stress test w/ HeavyLoad: didn't go over 65c. Whistled loudly (coil whine?) but otherwise fine
-memtest86 looks fine (only left it for a couple hours though, could test harder if advised)
-flashed motherboard to latest bios
-ran furmark test for about 10 mins: around 80c, CPU around 70c, seemed fine
-completely clean uninstall/re-install of graphics drivers
-force fans to higher speeds - freezing still occurred - though perhaps took longer to happen?
-removing GPU and running Heaven test - no freezing occurred

So I'm assuming the most likely culprit is the GPU, but I suppose it could be PSU related?

I haven't done any overclocking. I did try UNDERclocking the GPU clock and memory clock though (with EVGA Precision), but the freezing still occurred.

Any help or advice much appreciated. This PC build has frankly been way more of a hassle than I anticipated and I'm currently regretting not getting something pre-built.

I haven't made any changes to the 2133 RAM. I'll look into how to lower the frequency and give it a shot. I assume that's through the bios.
I hope my PCI slot would be fine as it's pretty new, but if I can find some air to blow I'll try that too.
Thanks!

Being new doesn't mean its flawless! When at home i use a simple hairdryer

Okay so I used EVGA PrecisionX to turn down Power Target, Temp Target, GPU clock and Memory clock. Aggressive fan speed profile. And I've just run Heaven benchmark for an (unprecidented) 3 hours without freezing. Not sure what to make of this, what to try next. And I don't know much about overclocking, so don't really know what I've done and what it means.

Screenshots during this (successful) Heaven benchmark:

I guess I'll just continue to run this PrecisionX Profile until I know what to do next. GTX 1080 is way faster than I need anyway tbh :p
