Gaming need as usual. My overclocked CPU i3 530 @ 3.75GHz on stock cooler gives good performance but I'm looking for FURTHER cpu upgrade.
My question, x3460 or i7 860 @ 2.8Ghz will be faster than my i3 530 @ 3.75 on stock cooler?
Xeon is cheaper than i7. But is it overclockable? What would you pick for better gaming?

Setup:- i3 530 @ 3.75GHz
Gigabyte H55M-USB3
Nvidia gtx750Ti
6gb ddr3 rams.
Game to run - Company of heroes 2 (only)

In games that only use 2 cores the i3 would be faster... in everything else the i7 would win

But you're comparing stock to OC and that's a but unfair. You're going to OC the i7 right? Turn off HT to keep the temps down and slam it up to 3.6ghz with stock cooler + stock voltage no problem

Yeah the Xeon x3460 is overclockable.

In my old HTPC I had a i3 540 overclocked to 4.0Ghz, replaced with a Xeon x3430 overclocked to 3.8Ghz. The Xeon was much faster in gaming, the i3 struggled in modern games (like COD:AW), where as the xeon ran it just fine.

No, used a better budget cooler. Dont use the i3 cooler on the xeon, it wont be able to cool it well enough.
