I plan on buying the $500 Gigabyte GTX 1080 8GB for my new gaming pc but then i thought wait...

I have a full ATX gaming computer from about 10 years ago that still runs without a problem, just very difficult to play any games besides indie ones or boot up a N64 emulator. It runs on a Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard (https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142)with an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 5GB of Corsair DDR2 ram. I'm buying the graphics card anyway, so what kind of frames do you think I'll be getting on a rig like that? basic games like minecraft up to games like GTA V, borderlands 2 and Battlefield One

(again this is just for fun, im not keeping this as an actual setup)

Solution
It would depend on each game more than it would usually, since it's so heavily bottlenecked. My guess is at 1080p, minecraft would run mby like 20 fps higher than it was, gta v would be really hard to run, you would have to turn the settings down, I don't play borderlands, so I have no idea how to would run, and bf1 might actually not run to bad, because it's very gpu heavy if I remember right. lol, we always say that you want to send a lot of you budget on the gpu, but idk about double what your rig costs XD. On a serious note, hope you love your new beast of a card.

I recently did a similar thing. I plugged a 1070 into a i7-920 rig. It had been running with an AMD 7870 myst (~7930) If you can force the games to run in a low overhead API like mantle, you can reduce the stress on the CPU and therefore increase GPU performance even more. I only ran 3d mark and it gave me testing result errors cause it really didn't like the drivers for some reason. In sky diver I went from 14k to 22k. Firestrike I went from 5700 to 10900 and in Firestrike Extreme I went from 2700 to 6900

My PSU is new because the old one killed itself on me about a year or so ago
