Going for a gaming and work build here

Is there any advantage to having a 256gb SSD and a 1tb HDD over just having a 1tb SSD?

Might sound a bit stupid... dont know much about drives though

Things to keep in mind to know if the SSD will make that much of a difference for loading times in games and such is that I will be running with an i7 7700k oc'd at 4.6ghz and a gtx1070

Solution

Assuming the 250GB...
OS, applications, and maybe a game or two. Whatever fits, under 200GB.

You can designate the HDD for other games, and Doc/Music/Video/Pics.

Read this:
Win 7 & 8: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-1834397/ssd-redirecting-static-files.html
Win 8.1 & 10: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2024314/windows-redirecting-folders-drives.html
a) COST

b) if you set HDD to shut down (to avoid noise and wearing out) it can take over FIVE SECONDS to start up again. (some things like Recycle Bin will wait and spin up ALL drives even if you only wanted to check the SSD).

I have my HDD set to 20 minutes (Power Options). It's slightly annoying but it's not very often. It's also not feasible for me to buy a 4TB SSD.

c) Performance - the HDD is fine for most games, or storing backups, videos etc. An SSD is arguably overkill for much of this.

d) BACKUP - it's a very good idea to have at least TWO drives so that the WINDOWS drive can be backed up to the other drive. (i.e. setup Acronis True Image with an AUTOMATIC backup/ delete backup profile)

So...?

I would go with a 256GB SSD + HDD. Later you can decide if another SSD or HDD makes more sense.

The cool thing about drives...you can add new as time goes on.
Get the 250SSD + HDD.
Add more later.

OS an applications on the SSD, all that other stuff on the HDD>

My current system is 5 x SSD, ~2TB space.
Of course, it did not start out that way.
It started with a single 120GB SSD and a couple of HDD's. New drives were added as time wen on.
Now, it is SSD only.
The only spinning drives I have live in the NAS box, or in an ancient laptop.

So what should I install on my SSD for now? Just my OS and maybe some games/software?

Also, is the difference in loading times from an SSD vs. an HDD in things other than the start up noticable enough?
