So I recently tried to restart my pc because my wifi would always disconnect randomly from my dell xps 8700. When I restarted it stayed stuck on the dell logo and nothing would happen. I couldn't hit f12 or f2 it would just show the logo so I tried taking the little battery out and holding the power button and the putting it back in and starting it but it still didn't work. Took out the ram and tried to restart it but that didn't work either. Then I unplugged my internal hard drive and it seemed to boot up to the windows 8 installation that you get when you first purchase the pc or try to restore it. Can it not be starting up because the hard drive is faulty? I haven't owned the pc for more than 3 years yet the hard drive is faulty? Could there be a fix or another reason it won't start up?

Solution

So with the hard drive removed it looks to work OK, at least boots past the BIOS. Try a different SATA cable, try with a different drive and install Windows clean on that new drive.
Back up a bit, if you removed the hard drive, how is it booting to a Windows setup? Is there more than one drive? Do you have an external drive connected?

A hard drive can fail in days, or years, time you owned it does not matter. Always treat your hard drive and data like the drive will fail tomorrow.

A computer will not boot at all without ram.

I know it doesn't run without ram lol I reseated it. Also when I try to use another external hard drive it won't let me because I need to have Windows installed so looks like I'm going to have to get that on a USB stick
EDIT: so I just found an external hard drive that has eSATA connection (?) when you take off the USB casing and it's working and installing Windows on there from my pc backup cd. Might have to still buy new hard drive because this drive is cases in plastic because it's an external hard drive.
