Confused about what to upgrade on my computer

Sorry to ask questions on my first post, but it's not like I am a reservoir of computer knowledge to go helping other people!

I built a computer four or five years ago and it needs replacing of either the GPU or CPU or both (which would mean I have to upgrade my MOBO too). It is playing games ok enough, but I know I'm struggling on modern games to keep Medium and High settings, which means I want to upgrade.

My system is:
CPU: 3570K I5 overclocked to 4.2
MOBO: Asrock Extreme 4
GPU: MSI 660ti Power Edition
PSU: Seasonic 650 Gold
Ram: 8 gigs of something with heat sinks on top...

I am not the guy who needs maximum everything. It would be nice to finally run Ambient Occlusion without killing my fps, though. I would like to run things at 60 fps for another four years or so. At which point, I'm pretty sure I'd need a new PC top to bottom.

Thing is, I want a 1070, but I hear from many people I need a new CPU. Then I look at CPUS and up until this Kaby Lake, I don't see much benefit from that upgrade. I guess over time the CPU upgrades add up? I want to run Skyrim remastered in its full glory! I am also considering getting a 1440p monitor next year, so I am unsure if a 1080 would be worth the jump for me.

The other consideration is that I like multiplayer games, and they seem to use the CPU more. I play Elder Scrolls Online and like Titantfall and Battlefield. Plus I want to play GTA V in modern graphics if possible. I run a lot of mods in Elder Scrolls which cramps my RAM, so when I upgrade my GPU I will have to upgrade that too, I would think.

So I am unsure of how well a 1070 would future proof me. Does anyone have any considerations for this confused guy?

Great, you should be able to go for a bit higher overclock if you want to get a 1070.
