I want to buy a rx 480 either 8gb or 4gb. My goal is to get the highest fps possible (using a 144 refresh monitor) @ 1080p only - I will never go higher resolution since the new monitor I am buying is 1080p and I want to keep high frame rates anyways.

So my question is will the extra 4gb in a graphics card even affect anything? I am asking because my understanding is that the extra ram primarily affects textures/resolution and 1080p isn't that high these days. I do want to future proof but again if I am never going past 1080p will I ever use the extra 4gb? Or does the extra ram help with things other than resolution? I have a i5 6600 and 16gb ram

One thing to notice is that AMD RX 480 cards has a difference in memory clock between 4 gb (7000 Mhz) and 8 gb (8000 Mhz). This may result in few frame drop in some games.
Another thing is that some games already utilizes more than 4 gb in 1080p on very high or ultra settings. But you will never utilize whole 8 gigs with this card.
If you want to achieve fps close to 144, then you should look to direction of nvdia gtx 1070 or gtx 1080, because even on 1080p rx 480 struggles to reach 60 fps in some games on highest settings. Depends on what games you play.
Decision depends on price difference between 4g and 8gb. I got my rx 480 8 gb for the price of 4gb, so it was easy decision :)
