Did I accidentally overclock my gpu?

Hello there,

I was planning on overclocking my GPU being the r9 280x after getting this result from fire strike 3dmark. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm/19207349

I watched a guide on overclocking (Jayz two cents), downloading msi afterburner in the process. I was tweaking with the settings whilst following his instructions but not touching anything that would change how fast the GPU works. I was changing things like the UI of the program and extra features. What I will say is that when I opened msi afterburner the core clock speed was automatically at 1080 mhz.

I realised that I couldn't overclock my GPU without changing the voltage settings, and the r9 280x apparantly has that locked unless you flash a new bios or something. I wasn't really keen on that so I closed msi afterburner.

I then did another 3d mark test for the hell of it and realised that my GPU is now running at 1080mhz? Before it was 850mhz. The memory is the same as before at 1550 mhz.

I'm getting more fps but i'm not really sure if what's happened is safe... my PC froze earlier but I don't think that's related to it as my pc was idle when it happened.

It would be great if I could get some advice as to what I should do or an explanation as to what happened. I've never overclocked and for that reason I closed msi afterburner after learning about having to flash the bios thing as I have no experience but I guess I did actually somehow overclock it. I don't know.. As I said, I didn't touch the voltage settings at all on afterburner nor anything else.

Thanks everyone for your help in advance. :)

Just an update on my situation. I did a windows restore to a time before I installed msi afterburner and the gpu is still clocked at 1080mhz. I'm not really sure why.
