In complete speculation what would be better in terms of performance? The extra vram, or the better card. Seeing as most 1080p applications don't use more than 3g vram I am leaning towards 580 4g. But the question is: Will 4g's vram be future proof enough to last several years, and run modern titles at decent quality.

Solution
580 4GB (if it will be a thing).

RX480 is pretty much same shit as my 290X performance-wise and I have 4GB VRAM at 1440p I have no issues so far, aside of course heavy titles where it starts showing its age and 580 will be just a minor improvement over that.

1080p? 4GB for sure is more than enough, I'd say in case of 580 you will reach the point where it's not strong enough faster than there is not enough VRAM.

You can also approach this issue from another standpoint - 8GB VRAM is a complete waste on 470/570, especially at 1080p anyway, so it boils down to 570 vs 580 and 580 is certainly better.
You are assuming that there will be a 4gb variant of the 580. It's very possible, but nothing official.

That being said, 4gb is about right for 1080p right now, only a few games exceed that and that is usually with mods adding to the load. There is no such thing as future proof, but I think if there is a 4gb version, it would suffice for at least a few years.

The current RX 470 8GB's also have slightly faster memory clocks compared to regular RX 470 4GB's. (1750 Mhz vs. 2000 Mhz?).

If priced rightly, the RX 470/570 8GB can be a good choice. But price wise the RX 480 4GB is the better valued one.
