Is it worth upgrading from i5 2500 to ryzen 1400?

Ryzen 5 1400 is about 38% faster in general workload. It is even better than i7 2600K. Now in specific scenarios, you can guess this percentage can vary from 5% better to 50% better.

The point that most people miss here is that Ryzen 5 1400 has 4+0 CCX configuration and 10MB cache while the Ryzen 5 1500X has higher clock speeds and extra 8MB of L3 cache in 2+2 CCX configuration. The good that Ryzen 5 1400 has is the absence of "infinity fabric" that locks on RAM speed to interconnect the two CCXs . So in gaming at the same clocks with low speed DDR4 RAM (say 2133mhz or 2400mhz) the Ryzen 5 1400 is cheaper, can OC and also more efficient. But in more complex programs the extra cache would make a difference.

Also, you can search ebay...
If you're going to make that upgrade, it might be better to spend the extra $20 for a 1500X instead and OC to 3.9 or 4.0GHz on all 4 cores (it'll boost to 3.9 by itself on 1). It'll depend on the types of games you're playing whether it will be worth it or not, but I'd venture to say it will be a somewhat significant performance increase. It's not going to be night and day, but should be noticeable, more so in newer titles than older ones.

Thanks, what type of percentage performance increase are we talking?

Also I'm not confident with overclocking and I didn't want to use more power and make more heat in summer.

I'm trying to decide whether to get a new motherboard for the i5 2500 or upgrade to a ryzen with new mb + ram + cpu which would cost a lot more of course.

It wouldn't make sense to invest in a new motherboard for your i5-2500 if it still works fine today. It would only make sense to upgrade the CPU to an i7-2600(k) and save a bit of money that way, if you can find one for cheap. The i7-2600 is still decent today.

I forgot to mention that I am not upgrading the motherboard for the sake of it but because it was flashed with the wrong bios and is broken now.
So I can't use the i5 2500 currently at all unless I get a new motherboard for it, or forget about it and upgrade everything to a new ryzen system keeping my case and psu.

So it's $100 for an i5 2500 system or
$450 for a ryzen 1400 system (minus whatever i can sell the i5 and 16gb of ddr3 for).

16GB of DDR3 should go for ~$70 on eBay, the 2500 should fetch ~$50, and a 1500X, 16GB of DDR4 3000MHz, and a B350 board should be about $440 including tax. I personally wouldn't buy an old z77 or z67 board for $100 when you can get a new b350 for the same price, this seems like a good reason and time to upgrade.

OK also I forgot to mention I'm in Australia so everything is more expensive.

Yes I thought why buy an old one for the same price but then I realised the lowest amd cpu was $250 instead of $165 (must have been usa price) and then I realised I can't use any of my ram either and it's something like $180 just to get the same amount of ram I had before. Though I'm not a super hardcore gamer that wants to max everything out and I'm only using a 1080p monitor.

Or I could get an mATX motherboard for the i5 for about $70 but then I can only use 8gb total of my ram, so pay to downgrade.

Here I'm not really sure how some of these numbers equate to performance but some of the specs only seem a few percent better.

I was just sort of wondering if anyone could give a one number answer of how much better the ryzen 1400 is than the i5 2500 in percentage?

Or do I need to wait a bit until there are more benchmarks etc?

Also, you can search ebay for BIOS replacement CHIP ; they usually cost anything between 9$-12$ and will revive a bad flash for sure.

The entire Ryzen lineup runs in temps even lower than intel's offerings so don't be afraid of OC'ing (more better locking all cores to max stock speed instead of one core) even in the stock cooler.

But if you still don't want to OC at all, better wait for an A320 motherboard that should come 30$-40$ or so cheaper than B350 ones. My recommendation here is the Asrock AB350 PRO 4. It has really good features and it is the most reliable of all B350 motherboards. Sorry for my long post.

Thanks, very informative, maybe I will wait.

I probably won't overclock but maybe instead of upgrading at some stage in the future I might think of it then.

If you do overclock though and most of the time you are just listening to music or web browsing do you use a lot more electricity than if you don't overclock? That's one reason I'm considering upgrading to save power when I am not gaming which is most of the time since I'm not sure how power efficient the Phenom II x4 955 is that I am currently using now since my i5 2500 pc broke.

It would be unlikely that I would find a bios chip because my motherboard was the early model (non b3) that had a faulty sata controller and it was recalled. So there are not many around, but if I did find a bios chip, is it hard to solder? I can picture trying to solder the tiny connectors in and solder spilling over two tracks and ruining the mb anyway.

Just fix your motherboard bro. It will cost pocketmoney and u get fully operational pc.

on the side note.
I find myself in similar position because i have fx 6300. Upgrading to 1400 would be huge fps gain in 33% games but almost no avarage fps gain in 66% games.
it is worth noting that minimum fps would be much higher in ALL of the the games.

However I have a choice to upgrade cpu or buy freesync monitor ( i have 470). i wonder what is the best.
