Hi there,

I have a 2tb HDD that has been in use for a while which means all of my programs and project files are here along with Windows 10. It is the only drive in the pc.

I am rebuilding soon and because my old drive is full, I bought a SSHD to be my 2nd drive. It hasn't been used yet so I'm going to put in it the system when I rebuild it next week.

I'm thinking of installing my OS on the SSHD but I want to keep the old HDD the same as it was without having to format it, copy everything over from a backup and reinstall all of my programs.

Is this possible? Will my old hard drive still function as it used to even though the pathways will be d drive instead of c drive? Will this break programs or project files that rely on absolute pathways?

The other option is to leave the old drive and install it in the new machine on its own and boot from Windows install media to repair Windows and install the drivers for the new mb etc.

Thanks!

Solution
If a hdd has an OS on it and if you put it on another mobo (if you want it to be the bootdisk), you should do a clean install

Doing a repair wont fix it. If you use the old hdd as an extra hdd, then the programs on it wont work if you use the sshd as a bootdisk.

You'll have to reinstall the programs
