Hey there!

I'm going to build a PC soon and wanted to know which processor is the best.
AMD just released the RYZEN 5 SKUs yesterday and the benchmarks seem rather interesting.
I'm using this PC for gaming.

Thanks.

Solution
^ Definitely go with the RYZEN 5 1600 then. It is the best value of RYZEN 5's line-up, and for that purpose it beats the Intel i5-7600k in all aspects.

For gaming purely? i5-7600k.

You'll get decent performance and save costs with AMD's RYZEN 5 1500X or 1600 though. With the 1600 you don't need to buy a CPU cooler, the one included is decent.

No, he won't, in pretty much most cases at the least, unless he's getting at least a GTX 1080. Then again, most who get GTX 1080s get i7s as well. :/

What won't he? Intel Kaby Lake is a bit ahead in gaming performance, but RYZEN 5 is definitely still decent in most games.

Thanks! I'm going to order mine today but I'm confused.
1600 or the 1600X?

for now the 7600k offers the best gaming performance, but the 1600X is about 90% of 7600k in most games. with ryzen optimised patches, it may be better than the 7600k. future games n dx12, vulkan will exploit the multi core cpu horsepower n may give better performance in future games.

RYZEN 5 1600 Non-X is best value, not 1600X.

With the 1600X you're spending 250 dollars + 30 dollars or more on the CPU cooler. The 1600 performs and overclocks similarly, costs 218 dollars and has a good CPU cooler included.

Err, I thought you said he'll get more performance with the Kaby Lake i5.

There's still a problem in the Zen architecture that prevents it from reaching its full potential. That, or the low clock-speeds. I'd say a little bit of both. When it gets fixed, it'll only be 6% behind Skylake/Kaby Lake clock-for-clock (+ core-for-core). In games that make use of more than 4 cores, it'll beat the mainstream Intel processors.

Ryzen 5 1600X is potentially as good as the 5930K or the 5820K.

Does the i5 support DDR4-2600? I thought it only supported DDR4-2133/2400 and DDR3L-1333/1600.

"Considering what Intel charges for its Core i5-7600K, we'd certainly like Ryzen 5 1600X a lot more for gaming if it debuted at a lower price. Much of the Ryzen tapestry is woven using value as its thread. But it's hard to keep that story together when Ryzen 5 1600X sells for $249 and Core i5-7600K goes for $240. With that said, professionals on a budget are far more likely to jump on a potent six-core chip like the 1600X when it's able to beat the $450 Core i7-6800K."

1600 comes with a cooler capable of the overclocking to 4GHz unlike the 1600x, which does not come with a cooler.
Problem solved overclock the Ryzen 5 1600 to 4GHz@$219 price point!
ASRock X370 Taichi@~$200 has had consistently good results with CPU overclock, and single rank memory compatibility@3200MHz. Also, good performance enhancements from motherboard updates. It's also, a little hard to find!
G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200@$186 Seems to be the goto choice of a lot of popular YouTube bench testers.

The 1700 can also overclock to 3.9GHz and you have essentially an 1800x!

How much can I overclock with the stock cooler?

I will try that for sure but I have seen many people getting stable performance with 3.9ghz oc with the stock cooler.

I agree, it's not striving for maximum temps rather maximum overclock. Get a $29 Evo 212 and this problem is eliminated. I myself have a 2500k@4.5GHz which sometimes gets into the low 80's on a Evo 212. I've been running this overclock for 7 years with no ill effects. I don't think he is danger of maxing the thermal thresh hold of all 8 cores even running the stock cooler while gaming, or doing most things. The video tends to agree with this after looking at those extremely high overclocks hitting 88-89C.
