Hey, I want to do a kind of out there build. I would like to build as small of a for-factor PC but it must meet certain criteria. I posted in the Forum because it only seemed right, in conjunction with concern for the size of the Motherboard. So here are the requirements ☺

1.) No less than 10+ Tera-bytes of storage, with raid 1. So ok I'll settle for less than 30 but with the price of HHDs now at 10 TB, i'm trying to get as much as I can, plus I dont plan to build for a couple months so price drops expected still- so I'm thinking 4 hard drives }+ 1 ssd for primary OS maybe, just 256gb SSD or not ssd, I don't care to much about that

2.) need to have option for 2 optical drives, and while keeping this in mind with the disk drives because now space is a little bit tighter

3.)Must have room for GTX 1080 or smaller size card of similar capability

4.)Needs room for 1 extra externet card or must come with 2 lanports by default

5.)Intel processor only

6.)32 gb ram or will consider 64gb

So, these are the only requirements. But, also actually, it need to be able to fit in the bottom of my back pack. What are your suggestions?

with your expansion card requirement and frankly the optical drives too, you're looking at a microATX motherboard and a microATX tower to get it as small as possible. Travel sized like you are talking about generally requires miniITX build though.

If you can live with only 1 optical drive there's one "travel" case I'm aware of in the microATX size range.

anyways a quick build with most of what you wanted. What exactly are you trying to do with this build?

Any budget?

And there's not much you can do with small and >10TB of storage. And 2 optical drives? Either you can fit a 1080 or 2 drives.

VM Host for virtual machines, local + remote
Primary/secondary gaming rig for use with my 55" 4k LG for when I am not gaming with my laptop
NAS storage device + small partition to have virtual disk for apache web server
NAS for backing up 1080p video
NAS for everything else
Pretty much 30-56% NAS for un-editted video and some post production video. I want to use it in conjunction with my laptop so I can keep more free space on my laptop, more or less.

I assume you're going for unRAID? If so, then maybe this would work.

I contemplating making this my suitcase build. I found this post along time ago about this dude who built his portable desktop into a brief case and I'm considering allocating my money towards that. I really want a new laptop, but the laptop alone won't work for storage and I don't want to go flash memory or usb drive. Does anyone know anygood walkthroughs. I want to keep interface fully remote but want to build huge battery. Anyone know any sources? I was reading that you could wire as many lithium ion battiers toghther as you want and make your own battery backup. I want to make hybrid desktop + laptop, I will probably prototype case out of plexi and wood, any good idea's on this?

E-mail LinusTechTips about this jerryrig? I guess?

I'm thinking you should get a powerful laptop and then somehow get a battery to fit in your backpack to power "an a$$" (a NAS). Otherwise, any graphic cards will be too powerful hungry to run as a render server.
