Hello, new member with a challenging upgrade issue due to the age of the desktop computer. This is my backup desktop computer and the motherboard and CPU are aging. I do like to play games on it occasionally (mostly ESO, Witcher 3, etc...) and just received 'Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Wildlands' in though I have yet to install that game.

The base desktop is a Gateway DX4320-39 with 6GB Ram. It uses an AMD Phenom II X4 820 2.80 GHz CPU.

I replaced the power supply with a Corsair CX650M and the GPU with a pci express 3.0 Zotac GTX 1060 mini 6GB.

What needs replacement is the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Any suggestions as to what a best value/reasonable cost replacement motherboard/CPU combo that matches this Gateway DX4320-39 computer case would be?

Looking at the motherboard the case uses standard spacing so it's possible to install a different mobo in the case. If your budget allows, I'd suggest a micro-ATX board, skylake/kaby lake i5 and 8GB-16GB of ram. You'd be looking at around $300+ to upgrade.

If your looking to upgrade then you need to bump up to something faster than a AMD Phenom II X4 820 2.80. Nothing on AM2+/AM3 is really a huge improvement.

Here are a few suggestions.

1. With Ryzen launching it's hard to recommend FM2+, AM3 or AM3+ chips. I would suggest waiting till Ryzen 3 chips launch... soon.... those should offer a affordable upgrade option that will be much better than what you have and be a little faster than options 2 at around the same price.

2. It's not AMD but offers some huge performance increases for you and will fit the case.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Pentium G4560 3.5GHz Dual-Core Processor ($54.88 @ OutletPC)
Motherboard: MSI B250M PRO-VDH Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($69.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws 4 series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($59.92 @ Amazon)
Total: $184.29

3. Classifieds on IT sites, just add a post "Looking for CPU/MB Combo" here are some decent ones that are very active if you still seek to use FM2+/AM3+ chips none of which are much faster at all than #2 in gaming.

Thank you for that great post delaro! It was a best value upgrade recommendation which many readers will benefit from (and you were gracious enough to provide such good info and links!).

Honestly, I would have already marked your reply as best answer except that I can spend more than that.

I'm willing to spend around between $350-$400 instead of $180. I like quad processors. Let's kick it up a notch!

Since AMD isn't the best solution for this in-between period of their development until Ryzan 3 and 5 launch, what would be your INTEL recommendation for a price range of $350-$400 keeping with 8 GB of RAM?

Gaming performance is about the same, A Ryzen 5 1600X or I5 7600K are about $50 more.

Solution
I would recommend replacing your current poorly cooled case that has Gateway wiring with a standard bare Micro-ATX Mini-Tower or Mid-Tower case.

The Intel 200 Series Chipset motherboard is what I would recommend.
