Samsung 960 EVO driver problem

I just installed a Samsung 960 evo M.2 drive. The Bios of my Asus Prime z270 recognises it fine, so does device manager, but no letter assigned and it does not allow me to associate it with the downloaded samsung driver.
I assigned a letter to the drive in device manager, and now it works but only with an old windows (2006) driver and slow. When I try to force the samsung driver it gives me an error message (roughly translated) "no compatible driver found or not x64 compatible"

I think this is due to w10 treating the drive as a partition of the system drive and it will not even let me format it.

Any ideas as to how to proceed?

Hi,
You get the NVMEe Controller driver from Samsung and not the Disk driver, open device manage, expand storage controllers and you'll find the Samsung NVMe controller installed. The Disk will use the driver provided by Win 10 dated 2006:na:
