Hi,

I am planning to buy a 2006 Intel iMac, running Tiger - my first Apple computer! On the Windows side of things, I am aware of the implications an 'unsupported' OS carries; no security updates means running the OS is a liability. How do 'older' OSX versions, such as Lion fair? Do they still have updates from Apple? Is there a general lifespan of a Mac operating system? And finally, is Lion still safe to use today?

Many thanks,

Ben

I've been doing this for decades, am running Mavericks because I don't like the flat look of newer. I don't run any virus scan, gave that up long time ago. I do have an hardware firewall. I maintain OS image backup and separate data backup. I have auto update turn off, basically I don't update unless there is a feature in the OS that I must have, I pay little attention to security updates. I do have a 3rd sense when something is "not right" at which point I restore my "last known to be good" Image backup. That's just me.

But something more practical, my Mavericks browser is complained by several websites and they sometimes do not display correctly, but that's why I have updated Chrome+Firefox, OSX versions of course loaded just for those occasions.
