Is coil whine on 1080ti caused by bad PSU or just the card?

I just upgraded from a 1070 to a 1080ti, I have a VS550W corsair powersupply and my 1070 didn't generate coil while but my new card it is very loud and sounds like a cricket under load.

Is this caused by my power supply or is it the card? Also, is my power supply efficent/safe for this card or would it be stressing it? Don't want to lose my pc components over a cheap power supply so would happily upgrade it if need be.

First of all, Nvidia recommends at least a 600W power supply for the 1080 ti and I'd get a quality one if you're running a $700 graphics card on it. That card can draw 275W under load or more, 550W is cutting it pretty close. A quality PSU will last you a long time and is a good investment. As far as the coil whine, when is it whining? Most of the time coil whine is caused by excessively high FPS.

Here are a couple good PSU options:

I personally have the 750GQ and it's really good, the cables just...

You should probably upgrade the psu, but that is not what is causing the coil whine. The coil whine is the card itself, and you should try RMA it to see if you can get a new one without cool whine.

coil whine is most likely from the card . Try to Avoid EVGA they have bad history in Coil whine.

as for the power needed for that card to run , if a good power supply , 550 watts is more than enough.

Nvidia and other companies put the 600W recommendation because some power supplies dont deliver full 500 watts on 12V thats all.

total system power of the GTX 1080 ti in a full system is around 400 watts.

This review is made using 130 watts overclocked 6 cores CPU . Intel Core i7-4960X @ 4.2GHz

Yep, I agree with the comments above. The Corsair VS series are low quality units and yours is on the small side, so a better quality unit, preferably of a higher wattage would be a good start. Sometimes coil whine in graphic cards is made worse by a poor quality PSU, but there is no guarantee replacing the PSU will magically fix the problem.
