So I am wondering if it is worth the upgrade my cpu from phenom 965 ( not oc'ed not a good board for oc) to used i5-3550 ? Or is it a waste of money.
Intel cpu's have better single core performance.
Would it matter much in mmo's and with overall usage or in games in general ?
Later i am planning to upgrade my gpu to 280 or 280x.
Thanks for the info.

Unanimously, the i5-3550 is much better. Comparing stock settings, the i5 down right crushes the x4 965 in single(by ~85%) and multi-threaded(by ~50%) performance in synthetic benchmarks.

For general day-to-day usage, better single-threaded performance will make everything feel that much more snappier. Older games, and MMORPGS for the most part, don't tend to be able to utilize more than 2 cores effectively. For more depending AAA titles, the 4 cores would suffice, no real need yet for the 8+ threads found in i7's.

Whatever amount of your budget left over should be put into a better gpu. Though I am personally not a fan of the R9 200 and 300 series, so much more wattage is needed to power those power-hungry beasts!

mmo's usually only run on a single core, maybe two

so yes an i5 would be a huge upgrade

R9 280/X are usually cheaper on used market then their nvidia counterparts plus most of gtx 760/770 are 2GB of ram when r9 280 has 3GB.
