Should I upgrade from 980ti to 1080ti for 1440p gaming?

My monitor is 1440p 144hz IPS (MG279Q)

CPU Is i7 4790k @ 4.6 ghz.

I know the 1170 will probably match the 1080ti at around 400~ ish dollar next year (just like how the 1070 is on the same level as 980 ti at half the price).

I don't know if I should make the leap.

Every week that you are satisfied with your current card is a week closer to a price drop or to next gen, update as late as you can, else you are throwing money away. (unless the price drop on the sale price of the old card is more than the potential price drop on the new card (very very rare scenario)). I think that a single generation update is not worth it for the extra performance, 1180ti might be worth it, or 1080ti once the 1170/1180 come out.

There is not a single graphics card on the market that is overkill even for 1080p@144Hz, thus not a waste of money especially at 1440p@144Hz.

Uprading to a 1080 Ti would be wise, if you want to get the most out of your 1440p@144Hz display.

But if you're satisfied already, why upgrade regardless?

The first question you need to ask is, are you getting any kind of issues driving those specs with your current card???
If yes, then you need to make the leap. If no, then how long can that card sustain those resolutions, specially when games are becoming more and more resource hungry. That is assuming that your question is gaming centric.
If the card is doing fine right now, then you can persevere for another cycle of tech upgrade. Maybe wait for Vega or the next level of GTX watever.
