How much of an FPS gain can i expect when i upgrade my CPU/RAM?

I tested my GPU usage in some CPU heavy games earlier, just to see how bad my bottleneck is. What i found was that when my 1070(OC) was struggling to hit 60fps, it was only hitting about 65-70% usage(this is at 1080p).

I currently have an i5 3470 and a single 8GB stick of 1333mhz ram, so my question is - when i upgrade to a 7700k and 16gb(2x8) 3000mhz ram later this week, what kind of FPS improvement can i expect to see? (specifically CPU heavy games)

Can i expect to see a really solid (15fps+) boost, or is the difference between 65% and 100% not that huge?

Thanks.

  1. which games in particular? id thinkt he 1070 should be able to max out most games at 1080 so going to a 7700 should open things up quite a bit

CPU heavy games i've struggled with that come to mind: Witcher 3, Fallout 4, ME: Andromeda, TW: Warhammer: Arma 3, GTA V.

Obviously games more dependent on GPU i'm fine with, but when that CPU power is needed my system really struggles.

Well if you are seeing only 65% gpu usage in a game due to cpu bottleneck and not because you have vsync on you should see a sizable gain in fps with a cpu that will allow the gpu to be fully utilized. I recently upgraded from a fx 6350 with a 1060 to a i7 7700k with a 1060 and in GTA V I went from 40-60fps with the 6350 to 90-120fps with the 7700k 1080p max settings no MSAA or extended distance scaling. However I wouldn't expect the difference to be as drastic going from a 3470 to a 7700k.

How much FPS you gain will depend on the game, in games where you are cpu bottlenecked you should see a good gain in performance.
