I am planning on doing a clean install of Windows 8.1 retail version, from a disc on my Kaby Lake build. My goal is to update to Windows 10 that was downloaded on my last system, that I received during the free upgrade period onto this new build. However, almost everything I've read says it won't allow you to update... So, does that mean I can't download the Windows 10 upgrade through the Microsoft update depository once I have Windows 8.1 installed?

I know there are a million forms about this out there. However, they are not worded like this and I would like to help make it more simple for someone like myself that would be doing the same thing. Notice I included my AMD friends as well! :)

PS: My backup plan is to download an image of Windows 10 and just use my product key as it was used to upgrade me to it anyway from my last PC build. However, I would like to avoid going down this route if I can.

Solution
Yes , if you link it to a Microsoft Account it will work out fine. You need to use the Windows 10 media creation tool on the site ....wolf posted the link right above this response .....and then proceed to clean install.

Hello SR-71, thank you very much for responding so quickly! My old 10 install is still active. However, I never linked it to my Microsoft account, I just kept it on a local account because I just use this machine for gaming. However, if I understand you correctly. If I go into my old 10 and link it to my Microsoft account I should be good to go? My only other question would be, can I use my 8.1 disc to start the install and then it will automatically download 10 once I sign into my account or will I be required to use a Windows 10 image? From what I understand and please correct me if I'm wrong. If you are using a Kaby Lake or Ryzen Cpu, you can't update through Microsoft at all. Many thanks in advance!
