They were going bankrupt because of a flaw in one of their previous games that would cause your whole operating system to be removed if you removed the game. The recall of all those units was too costly. Who knows what would have happened to Bungie if Microsoft hadn't bought them.

With that kind of screw up Bungie deserved to die, Microsoft shouldn't have bought them.

I would normally agree. A bad or failing business doesn't always deserve a bailout. But they weren't bailed out by the gov't and larger corporations absorbing smaller ones is a pretty common practice. Microsoft had enough foresight to notice Bungie's potential and what they could do for the gaming industry. Halo 1 was a revolutionary shooter and Halo 2 set the standard for console-based online multiplayer.

Bungie's first games were the Marathon series, which were similar to the original Doom games. They were kinda popular in their time, but Bungie wasn't doing so well more recently until Microsoft bought them out and they developed Halo: Combat Evolved. That was the kick they needed to get where they are today: an independent studio releasing big-name games that people love.

My own wife, who has been palying Halo for over a decade didn't know what Halo CE was. She thought it was some sort of expansion. But, to her credit, she started with Halo 2 and didn't play CE much at all.
